3930k not running at overclocked multiplier

Thread Starter
So i'm running a 3930k with a sabertooth x79 and have its multiplier set to x47 with a baseclock of x100. When I open up CPU-Z the multiplier is still listed as "x 32.0 ( 12 - 47 )"; however, even with prime running it never bumps past 3.20Ghz. Also, for some reason the system wants to set the baseclock(not the strap) at x125, what the phreak is up with that?

No, it's disabled. And I was correcting the base clock to x100.

So i've tried it both with and without now, and still the same result...

I used this: Guide as my base line

When I'm done OCing it it have an weird power cycling thing happen, but isn't that normal? I know my psu power cycles itself once if I ever unplug and plug it back in.

For example when you change a setting in the bios and exit bios and save changes you may see your computer turn off and turn on again. This is normal.

There may be a setting called base clock or turbo/boost clock. You should try changing these settings if you can.

Yeah, i'm not seeing anything to change, along those lines. I'll just live with the "auto OC", or something, at least then I get 4.1GHz... On second though that seems like a terrible idea. The "OC Tuner" in the bios keeps trying to set the base clock to x125 ( matching the 125MHz strap). From what I read it's a bad idea to raise it above it x103...

totally different cpu and architecture. and youll never get a 47 multiplier to work with a 3930k.
you need to go read some guides on overclocking both sb-e and ib-e because its more old school overclocking than it is simple k overclocking. youre not dealing with a sandy k processor.

*EDIT* - to be more clear, the only 2011 socket cpu's that have unlocked multipliers are the x series, aka 3960x.

Every thing i've read and watched claims it's for sb-e. I've read that it's not intelligent to go above the stock 100 for two different reasons. One source said it was unsafe the other said it won't REALLY improve performance.
