How to do a dual monitor set up

I am interested in having 2 monitors for my pc,
using 1 as my "main" monitor, for doing the main work, (gaming, watching a video, etc ...) while using the 2nd one to browse the web, or pull up something else. (so for instace, on my main monitor im playing a game and on my 2nd monitor i have a web browser up so i can browse the web instead of having to alt tab, or while im playing games have a video up on 2nd monitor)

how excatly do i do this?
do i need a software / drivers or something?

also, do i need to have 2 monitors of the same kind, brand, resolution, screen size, etc etc or something?

thank you.

I have a 23" 1920x1080 and a 22" 1680x1050

They are both plugged into my top card (280x at the moment) one via a HDMI cable and one via a DVI

I have the same setup for my sig rig. You do not need drivers or software to run these, but to edit certain things about how your mouse works between them ETC use NVidia control panel. Just plug them both into your gpu and go into windows display settings and make sure everything is set to your liking, then go to nvidia control panel and do the same.

Under "display" there is a tab called set up multiple displays. Make sure your main monitor has the asterisk, and position the monitors on the panel to match your setup. That changes the way your mouse works between them. With stock windows you cannot have different wallpapers on two monitors, but with a great program called dual monitor tools you can set different wallpapers for the two monitors, and do other multi monitor things that normally are harder to do without a program. That can be found here - http://dualmonitortool.sourceforge.net/

*edit* also if you are gaming on one and using the other for browsing, make sure to go into nvidia panel, then manage 3d settings, and find the option multi display/mixed-gpu acceleration, and set that to single display performance mode. This will allow the gpu to give more power to the main monitor, so you will see no frame difference in games. You only need this enabled to multi monitor performance when you game on more than 1 monitor at once.

Might help to know that make and model of your graphics card.

An AH-IPS paneled 27" monitor is what I got two weeks ago, no regrets.

what i mean by having to alt tab with 1 montior,

is that if you have 1 monitor, it makes the game window minmized.

atleast with 2 monitors, if i alt tab onto the 2nd window thats on my 2nd monitor, it wont minimize the game and i can still keep an eye on it.

for example, if im playing LoL, and im at the fountain, and im walking to lane, if i alt tab with 1 monitor, i wont nkow when im into lane.

I could use both of my 27" monitors with my 1GB graphics card and you have 2GBs.

At the website Techbargins they list monitors on sale.
