Thread Starter
Right now there seems to be a serious shortage of AMD cards, which has led to a price spike.

But I'm not really interested in this price spike. I'm more interested in what will the long term effect of the currency mining be on GPUs?

- Will it mean a permanent increase in prices? Or will supply at some point gain enough ground to keep up?
- Will GPUs even be competitive in the long run for mining? Or will dedicated SOCs take over the job from GPUs?

I suppose it's possible that we may see a glut of AMD cards if Nvidia's Maxwell proves as good as its hyped (and there's evidence that the big GM100 might) as old mining cards flood the market. But it would also cause serious price skyrockets for the new cards.

Ultimately, this mining thing has gone from something that was obscure to a mainstream where well, it seems lots of people are getting into it. What, I suppose is going to be the impact in the long run from this mining for us computer enthusiasts? Will we see shortages of gaming GPUs or see a permanent shift in prices?

Edit: I'm not sure this is the right place for this thread, please move to the appropriate sub-forum. I've mostly put it here because right now, AMD is still dominant in the world of mining.
