PCIe slot issues

Thread Starter
Recently I got my new 780ti, I took out my old 6950s and replaced them with my new card, in the primary PCIe slot, card wouldn't boot, just a black screen when hitting the power button, I changed it to slot 2 and it boots just fine, just to see if my primary slot was ok I put my 6950 back in and it works just fine, any idea whats going on? Thanks

Maybe the motherboard does not recognize your graphics card. Update your BIOS to the latest version and try again. If this fails try th 780ti on another machine to see if there is problem with it.

Strange though that it would boot fine in the second slot. When your 6850 is in there does it recognize it as PCIe 16 in a program like gpu-z?

Well it is interesting how it is recognized in gpu-z while computer does not boot with it ? Sorry i thought you mean the 780ti.

I had similar problem with my motherboard it did not recognized my 780 until i upgraded to the latest BIOS version. I got black screen and single short beep. After bios update i have no such issue.

Do you unplug the power cable before trying to clear the CMOS/BIOS?

Yes I've pulled the power cable and moved the jumper and left it sit for about a minute, and my motherboard has the latest bios I can find which is 2.30, card works fine in second slot and in the 1st slot it does nothing at all, fans just spin and no signal found on monitor

As it appears the second PCI-E slot is 16X, might as well just leave the 780Ti card there.
