Help me find Windows key? - Page 2

Even if you've wiped the hdd, you could still theoretically recover it. The process would involve doing a partition recovery on the failed drive and then using hirens boot cd to try to pull the key. It's a bit of a long shot (especially with a failed drive that could be failed any number of ways) but I'd say it's worth a try to not have to buy another copy of windows.

@OP: Call Microsoft (1-800-936-5700) and order a replacement key. Provide them the part number you see on the COA sticker. It usually starts with the letter x and the followed by a series of numbers. Example: x16-12345

Most probably you have an OEM key, so depending on what version of Windows it is you may need to pay for a replacement key. $40 if I'm not mistaken.

If you don't like to call MS, you can also chat with one of their chat support folks: http://answerdesk.microsoftstore.com/msusa/en-us/answerdesk
