[Build Log] The Gaming Cube

Thread Starter
I have finally begun my slow process towards building myself a new gaming PC and thought I would make a build log for it. This is the first time I will be water cooling a PC, so pretty damn excited about that!!

As I mentioned, this build log will go for most of this year while I slowly buy parts and put everything together.

Aim:
To build myself a water cooled, dual SLI/Xfire gaming PC to run all games on the highest settings for a 27" 2560*1440 monitor.
Parts to be Purchased List:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K Intel 2011-3 Haswell-E
Motherboard: Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z87 X99 Chipset - brand unknown
RAM: 2x4Gb G-Skill Ripjaws DDR4 Ram - 16Gb (2x8Gb)
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Series - 256Gb
Graphics Card: 2x GTX 780 Ti or AMD R9 290X or GTX 800 series

Cooling:

CPU Waterblock: Alphacool NexXxoS XP3 Light - Black Chrome Edition*
GPU Waterblock: 2x Waterblock + Backplate
Fittings: Whatever is required to get it together!

Optionals:

LED Case Lighting: Any green LED's
Sleeved Cabling: BitFenix Sleeved Cables - Green, Black or mixture.
Sound Card: Haven't researched one yet. Not sure if I'll need one, depends on my motherboard choice.

Already Purchased List:

Case: Corsair Carbide Air 540
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G2
Fans: 10x Noctua NF-F12 120mm PWM Fans.
Fan Filters: 3x Silverstone FF123 120mm filters
Fan Controller: NZXT Sentry Mesh Fan Controller
Keyboard: Logitech G510
Mouse: Logitech G700
Headphones: Plantronics Gamecon 780
LED Case Lighting: NZXT Sleeved LED Cable (Green) - 1m
Watercooling - Radiators: 1x Alphacool ST30 360mm
Watecooling - Tubing: 2x XSPC FLX Green UV 1/2ID 3/4OD - 2m
Watercooling - Pump: EK D5 Vario with EK X-Top CSQ
Watercooling - Reservoir: Alphacool Cape Corp Coolplex Pro 10LT

That is basically the breakdown of my build. While I understand that some people will say that having any of those graphics cards in SLI/Xfire is overkill, I'm just trying to futureproof the PC a little bit.

I'm looking at going with a green/black colour scheme, hence the green LED/Cables/Tubing.

I will update this thread with some photos over the next few days as well biggrin.gif

Any comments or suggestions on alternatives would be greatly appreciated, so don't be shy biggrin.gif

Quick update, received my Alphacool ST30 360mm radiator yesterday, with the 3 Silverstone FF123 Fan Filters, to replace the standard fan filter that came with the case. Didn't get the ST30 240mm

Took some photos which I'll hopefully get up on here by the weekend, as everyone loves photos!! Also hoping to install the 360mm radiator with fans in push/pull config to get some mesasurements and idea of room left.

Now onto the big decisions I will have to make as this build progresses!! Here are my options:

1. Continue with plan of running a single 27" 2560x1440 monitor with 2x GPU's.

2. Run 3x 27" 2560x1440 (7680x1440) monitors with 3x GPU's.

3. Run a single 28" 4K (3840x2160) monitor with 3x GPU's.

At this moment, it will cost me roughly $1,100 AUD to buy 3x 2560x1440 monitors, and the Samsung U28D590 4K monitor might end up costing roughly the same. So is it worth going with three monitors or sticking with a single 4K monitor?

Other unknown is my GPU choice. Atm, I'm leaning towards the R9 290's due to far cheaper price with only a small drop in performance. Only things that may change my mind is the release of the Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290X with 8gb VRAM, and whether the extra VRAM will help me. Also, waiting to see what the Nvidia GTX 800 will bring performance & pricewise.

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts regarding my 3 options biggrin.gif

Here are the photos I've promised for a few days now! tongue.gif nothing special, just photographic evidence of what I've purchased so far.

I plan on having a crack at spraying the Noctua fans black, to better match the green/black colour scheme I'm trying to go with.
The Corsair Air 540 Case:

The Noctua NF-F12 120mm PWM fans

The Alphacool ST30 360mm radiator + Silverstone FF123 Fan Filters

That's it for now, but hopefully within the next month, I should be able to order and receive some more of my water cooling parts, such as CPU waterblock, 240mm radiator, 2 more Silverstone fan filters, tubing, pump & reservoir.

As always, if anyone has any suggestions, post them on here before I go out and buy more parts!! thumb.gif

So after some quality time spent on OCN today, talking with those far more knowledgeable than I, I found out that my planned Z87 motherboard & Core i5 CPU just won't do the job.

Instead, I have to get either a X79 or X99 chipset motherboard with a LGA2011 socket CPU. This will allow me to run a 3 way GPU setup without any bottlenecks.

So I'm going to wait until the Haswell-E chip is released to see its benchmark results and figure out if its worth buying the new X99 chipset, or purchase a older X79 chipset.

Thanks mate!! biggrin.gif

I looked at the Bitspower kit, looks pretty decent. I'll probably end up with some of their parts for the fittings that I'll need.

What are the plans for your case?

**UPDATE**

Just purchased the first of 3 monitors today. Can only afford one atm, so will pick up another two monitors in the future when I can.

Got the QNIX QX2710 Evolution II Samsung PLS monitor in Matte finish. So bring on the 27" on 2560x1440 resolution goodness biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

My plans at the moment are to have one of those tall cylindrical resivours sitting in the front of my case so you can see it through the side pannel. 360 res at the top but just a CPU block at the moment as they don't do a full waterblock for my XFX R9 280x DD frown.gif

Just had a look at that monitor you've chosen, a pretty goo monitor by the looks of it. And you're have 3 so thats pretty impressive.

I want one of those 21:9 monitors http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ADHLSMO/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d12_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=0SWXQDJM21F1RGY1PQBG&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455333147&pf_rd_i=468294

Completely forgot to reply to your post!! doh.gif

I considered having the res on the motherboard side, but i think with what I plan to pack into that side of the case, I'll have to put the res on the other side.

Hoping to have the res above the PSU and then feeding into the pump, but I've got to do some measurements and figure this stuff out. Should probably buy the pump/res & PSU to make my life a bit easier.

Yeah hopefully the monitor will arrive with no issues, that's my only concern worriedsmiley.gif

Your monitor choice looks good, Dell seem to be a very solid brand. Interesting resolution choice with 2560x1080? Any reason for that?

Your plan will still look pretty cool i think, it'll be a clean/neat look with the tubing coming through from the back thumb.gif

I want that monitor because it's the same resolution as two 1080p monitors side by side but without the extra cabeling and the bezel in the middle. plus i dont have the physical space to put two monitors on my desk redface.gif
