So my Athlon HTPC overheated....

Thread Starter
G'day,

So i came home this afternoon, woke up the HTPC/XBMC to throw on a tv show as i usually do and found it was unresponsive.
Strange i thought (Particularly since its a linux box thats never frozen in its life), rebooted it, all seemed fine.

Stuck a TV show on, get about 4 mins in and bam PC completely shut off. What the 'Hell' i thought.

Slid it out, took of the side and this is what i found

I was surprised to say the least! Though when i think about it, that retension clip has been under some fairly high stress, survived multiple house moves and such for quite a few years tongue.gif

Now i've got to dig out the original AMD cooler (Which has never been used btw tongue.gif) and make sure everything is fine (Guessing it is as it was running a tv show perfect up until the sudden shutdown, atleast i know the thermal shutdown works!, then chase up either a new clip (Ebay might have one?) or a new cooler tongue.gif. Its lucky it has an onboard gpu and is just full of hard drives, would have been interesting if that had have slammed into a discrete GPU :O

Might have to de dust that case too, being on the todo list tongue.gif

Smelt fine, no electrical burning smells luckily, but i just figured out when i bought the CPU, i bought just the chip (to put under this HSF), so....i don't have a stock HSF to stick on frown.gif

Bugger

I'd upgrade my gaming rig before i update that HTPC/NAS (Actually i'm looking into that but every time i do, i get sidetracked with other things then the next newest cpu/'etc ends up only a few months away/etc/etc), does a perfect job playing up to 1080p through xbmc and doing odd things (torrents/serving files/etc) in the background, That said, struggling to find another mounting bracket lol, old CNPS is just too old (i remember i struggled to find one when i originally grabbed that athlon in 2011 (for $100 lol)

Could always try a spot weld....but being alu prolly wouldn't work

Pretty cool though that it managed to keep running for 4 minutes without a heatsink on it at all tongue.gif

Might be new cooler time, can't find a zalman Zm-oc1 clip anywhere frown.gif Might just grab a cheapy from my local parts shop, get it running atleast, really feel like half my computers missing without this thing running haha

[edit]

Thinking of just picking up a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo (its instock, can have it by tomorrow afternoon).
Anyone got any other recommendations out of the list (of instock unit) available here over the Coolermaster (That supports AM2/3 Sockets)? (around the same price, i think the NH-D14 is a little too far over price and over over over kill for this little athlon tongue.gif Even though i could throw it on my Q9550 when i eventually upgrade smile.gif)

Cheers

i'd stick with something like the 212 for now. i'm sure you can order a replacement clip for the zalman cooler if you want to. but, for now, the zalman would just be the standby cooler for the 9550 (unless you lost your intel mounting kit that came with the zalman?)

Yes i've still got the original LGA mounting kit, everywhere i've checked list the AMD clip as discontinued, so unless i can get it through Zalman them selves, that said, $39 for an updated cooler that'll do everything, can't really go wrong there tongue.gif

ps, this has made me gather prices for a good upgrade from the 9550, $1000 easy frown.gif Not including updated power supply (this one whirls its head off running 2 GTX580's lol) and other tid bits to redo the water cooling. That upgrade bug hurts frown.gif
