hi, i own a pair of denon 1100's, AD 700's, TAD500's and I've decided im ready to move into the next tier of headphones... any recommendations?

i game, i listen to music (all genres), and am a budding audiophile

comfort matters, but not as much as epic sound quality.

i have a portable DAC and a soundcard w/ an amp

open to suggestions, thank you in advance!

I'd suggest you the Sennheiser HD598.The sound quality (especially with an headphone amp-sound card) is amazing!
Good alternatiive are most of Beyerdynamic high end models
Note that the HD598 don't come with a mic as it's not a game dedicated headset.

I have AKG K550 and Beyerdynamic T-70's...here is my comparison:

AKG K550 - Better build qty and comfort.
T-70's - Better sound (but more expensive).

For the $$$, I'd grab some AKG cans...

Beyerdynamic DT990 premium if you like cans emphasizing treble and bass. They are extremely fun headphones to listen to music and for gaming. Always get a proper amp though even with the 32Ohm version. It will bring out the most in it.

Oh and Beyerdynamic (especially the premium versions) are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used.

I just bought some of these 598's. Love them so much. Very clear, huge audio positioning and very very comfortable. They are actually really light, and just fit excellent. Amazon has had them in the $180-190 range for a while. Amazon has also had the Beyerdynamic DT-990-Pro-250 for $140~ lately, nice price on those as well.

I have the perfect suggestion right at $300! I have been SO satisfied with my Schiit Magni coupled with a pair of AKG Q701's. The Magni Amp and the Q701's just go so well together (even though some argue that it doesn't do them justice) and the Magni is so tiny that it will fit almost anywhere on a desk!

So basically my suggestion hands down is:

- AKG Q701 for $200 or Beyerdynamic DT 990 600 ohm Version for $380
- Schiit Magni (or Schiit Vali if you like Tube amps vs. solid state) for $99 - $119

Some background on this suggestion:

I am a budding audiophile as well, I also do a lot of gaming and happen to use a Zalmann clip on mic with my Q701's too! But the reason I recommend an Amp separate from your soundcard though is because you really need the extra power to drive the Q701's to an appropriate listening level. DAC's are slightly less important but seeing as you already have one there really isn't a need to buy another at the moment.

Note: I would also recommend the DT 990 pro 600 ohm version in place of the AKG Q701's. It really just comes down to this, go with the Q701's if you want a more flat and accurate can that focuses on the reality of the music and you want to save a buck or two. But if you are looking for a more bassy and "fun" headphone, go with the DT 990's for a little extra cash. Either way, I am sure that you will not be dissapointed! Good luck on your first step into the Audiophile world!thumb.gif
