[Mionix] Concept PX - Page 3

Its a real nice idea, but it isn't gonna work.

Not because of cost

Not because of thickness

Not even because of battery wear

No, the reason it won't work, is because the inductive charging is going to constantly heat both the mouse and the surface of the pad. People have a hard enough time already with sweaty hands.

This will be really awesome if they keep the battery really small because it will be constantly charged. No mouse wire getting in the way along with a normal sized mouse.

It probably won't need much charging so it won't heat up much.

Wireless mice that can last for months are designed with endurance first and foremost. On the other hand, wireless gaming mice, at least ones that are at all close to being any good for gaming, are designed for gaming first and wireless second. A high endurance wireless mouse likely has battery saving features like intentionally lowered polling rates (ie less than the already low 125Hz default) as well as aggressive 'sleep' functionality, neither of which you want for any game that requires any sort of accurate or responsive tracking.

A modern sensor and 500-1000Hz polling without ever going to sleep will not be too friendly to a battery, especially if we keep the battery small and light weight enough not to make the overall mouse too heavy in order to mitigate fatigue...so its really not a surprise that wireless gaming mice have batteries that would need to be charged on a daily basis (assuming a few hours of gaming per day).

It's not like people are using their mice wireless for a 6-8 days continuously. If they do, they tend to die before the battery does....

The problem isn't with the charging, the problem is with the lazy gamer (there are quite a few of them) and/or the gamers with erratic gaming patterns. It would be easier to keep a wireless mouse ready to go if you had a set schedule for when you could/would be using the mouse for gaming, but if you just want to plop down at your computer and game whenever the mood strikes you in your free time, it only takes forgetting to charge the mouse in just once for it to become a hassle, and sometimes its not just a matter of forgetting, but less than foolproof charging dock designs that fail to charge the mouse.

What people are missing the point that even though the inductive charging idea might or might not work, it is a good sign that Mionix is finally making a wireless Naos! That is good in a few reasons that this mouse appears to work with a USB cable or without (using the dongle) and the batteries inside (for me at least) is a pro because it will make the mouse a bit heavier to my liking (considering that Mionix has not been able to implement a weight system to any of their mice).

It is good to know that even if you don't want to use the questionable inductive charging aspect of the concept, it appears that the mouse itself will work without it (needs that wireless dongle for wireless) and still can recharge by an USB cable.

This seems great. Occasionally the cord on a mouse and reduce ease of movement, this eliminates that problem without the drawback of running out of battery whilst gaming.

Yeah it is but I still don't want to use a proprietary mouse pad for the sake of "charging." I don't mind recharging the mouse every like 20-30 hours of use in performance mode or something with the wire. Nevertheless, this is a step forward to mice design and setups. Either way, I can see this to be a two-step thing for Mionix: demonstrating that inductive charging might be the way to go in the future of wireless mice as an option for them to work non-stop on wireless mode and that Mionix is going to start making wireless versions of their wired mice.

Inductive charging isn't super complicated. If this works, it is only a matter of time until other people make their own inductive mouse pads. It isn't going to lock you to a single pad forever.

That is true, but I know that these pads will not have a cloth surface though (as it is prone to get very warm under the inductive charging process). I tend to use cloth mouse pads. Regardless, I am excited that Mionix is doing a wireless mouse and on top of a possible viable charging system.

woven metal pads could be made as soft as cloth
