Ways to reduce my power use?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, since I build a new PC my old one became the HTPC. Currently is kind of a overkill for it and it draws quite a bit of power. I was thinking of getting rid of the GTX 560 and get an 750 Ti for starters, and lower voltage on the CPU. any other ideas? biggrin.gif all suggestions welcome!

SSD instead of HDD will cut ~10W
Leave on all power saving features if you haven't already.

I am planning to swap out the 2.5" WD drive for an SSD for boot. Those two HDDs are old and I'm planning to swap them as-well for either a single 2TB or 2x1TB. Just not sure what model is the most efficient.

While using it as a HTPC your components will be pulling idle-like wattage with power saving features all turned on. I've toyed with this a bit here and there with mine, and decided that instead of replacing expensive pc components to save power I simply swapped out a couple of incadecent light bulbs in my house for cfl tongue.gif I understand where you are coming from though. What I'm getting at is calculate how long it will take you to recoup your investment vs what you will pay in power.

My only light sources are coming from the TV and the monitors tongue.gif You are right, I should just go get a kill-a-watt and see how much actual power it is pulling. It just seems like a lot of wasted power is being unused most of the time. oh since I'm in LA, I pay something like 0.22/kWh. I figured I can pawn the 560 off for maybe 100-150, and get a 750Ti for about the same but less power. Since the reviews on the 750 Ti is pretty good and can hold it's own for some games.

If you can get that much for the 560 then go for it. The 750 is definitely power sipping and will probably perform like you said. That doesn't even require a 6 pin does it? The difference in power usage between idle and normal "Home Theater" type stuff on my rig with an i3 and a 660 is maybe 10 watts. It's not until I fire up a game or do some encoding on it do I see a jump in usage. I also have it set to turn off hard drives when they are not in use, which probably saves a tiny bit.

My concern is even @ idle the tower draws quite a bit power because of the older hardware, and I'm paying some absurd $/Kwh.

The 750Ti doesn't need the 6 pin, I think is 60W compared to the 160W on the 560. also the i3 is much more power efficient especially the 3rd and 4th gen compared to my 955.

Play games with vsync on. That will also surely reduce your power usage.

I hear ya on that. I went from a 555 unlocked with a HD6770 to an Ivy i3 and the 660. However my power use at the wall idle and TV watching only dropped about 15-20 watts. I only pay 13c a kw so power isn't much of an issue for me. I live in the desert though so when the air conditioning is going, my pc's are a drop in the bucket compaired to the unit running. My bill in the winter is around $65-75 while in the summer it's $250.

Haha, you are lucky with those electricity prices rolleyes.gif Interesting that it only dropped about 20 watts or so. I read reviews on the 955 and it seems to draw 65-80 watts even at idle, compare that to some new i3 which only uses 50W or so.
