[RT] Samsung Unveils Chromebook 2 With Full HD Display - Page 4

Way too expensive. I love the idea but these are overpriced, underpowered, and very limited in what they can do.

I got my mom a Samsung Chromebook like two years ago for Christmas when they were $199. She isn't a fan of tablets, but shes not a hardcore user who needs a real OS either so I figured a Chromebook would be perfect. It's still working well for her. She pretty much just uses it to browse the web, check email, and watch Netflix. I think $200 was a solid price point for something that was in the middle of a tablet and a laptop.

That being said, $400 for the 1080p model seems pretty pricey. I personally couldn't imagine spending more than $200 on a Chromebook. Like others have said, you can get a relatively decent laptop with a bull-blown OS for around the same price.

I just want to see a <15", 1080p laptop with an i3 4158U, 4GB DDR3 1333Hz, and cheap HDD for $400 with an option for a 32GB SSD for $50 more. That would absolutely dominate the market...

$100 more for the 1080p screen does sound a little over priced I would spend no more then $300 on it which is what its worth too me most Chromebooks under $300 are cheaply made from what iv seen so i guess $400 isn't so bad for 1080p smile.gif

You can install Linux on it...

most averages joes use the PC for the bigger screens. so basically internet net and photos. thought most averages joes are accustomed to some version of windows though most average joes don't even know there is one kind of windows.

if it's an x86 and windows can be installed to it i might consider it but, the fact of the matter is might be able to get the same or better specs with a used laptop. example, i found a refurbished Leonovo with an i5, 4gb of ram. windows 7, 320gb hdd, extended 9 cell battery, and a 14400x900 screen, (not full HD i know) for $315 USD shipped and for another $125 USD you can get a 256gb SSD and another $12 USD you can get an external portable USB sata enclosure.

so for $452 USD, you can have a smoking fast STURDY laptop with a 320gb portable hdd AND windows 7. that's a really good deal considering most laptops 200-600USD new come with a 1366x768 screen and windows 8, though some prefer 8 but, 7 and 8 are better than vista.

I think the target demographic for this laptop is lost on this forum.

i personally like X86 chromebooks, not because of chrome os but because there usually silly cheap and can be rooted to put linux on for a almost disposable laptop experience. something that weighs nothing, has a proper keyboard and can be lost on a train or pinched from school and your not devastated (as long as the drive is full encrypted and you have passwords). The new Acer C720 is a great example of this at £198/$240 with a SSD, decent enough screen, decent enough build too and a surprisingly efficient haswell cpu with 8.5hrs battery life.

if your into that then its nice to have the options, although you would slow down the overall performance compared with a lightweight linux distribution, miss out on full disc encryption with snapshots and introduce the possibility for lots of malware and viruses and it would add $70 or more to the price of the machine thus defeating the point etc..

Each to their own though, choice is good thumb.gif

but if your point was 'wow skyrim on this hardware, must be win7 ..'

and of course minecraft. Plenty enough power for school/college (or work if your bored)
