Hello forum !

I need suggestions for 4 HDDs

HDD1 1TB - OS Was thinking WD10EZEX , The WD Blue single platter but only has 2 years warranty
HDD2 (1TB) - OS BACKUP
HDD3 (2/3 TB) - STORAGE
HDD4 (3/4 TB) - STORAGE AND BACKUP.

I need HDD not SSD and dont need really high end HDDs . WD black / blue drives are currently what im thinking how ever seagate barracuda came into considerations as well .What are your thoughts and preferences ?

The budget for HDD1 + HDD2 is around £120/$200 (can be changed if needed ) and no current budget is set for HDD3 + HDD4

Prices research (UK based , ebay)

1TB
WD black £55
WD blue (single Platter) £45

2TB
WB black £90
Seagate B £60

3TB
WD Black £120
Seagate B £80

4TB
WD Black £200
Seagate B £120

If you're deciding between the WD blue or black, I'd recommend the black. It costs a little bit more, but 2 1TB blacks would still stay under your $200 budget for HDD1 + HDD2. The blacks are a better performing drive than the blues in most (if not all) scenarios. They also include a 5 year warranty instead of a 2 year warranty.

As for HDD3 + HDD4, I'd recommend the Seagate Barracuda 3/4TB. I've used them in my builds for a long time and I've never had any issues with them.

I've been under the impression that the latest FZEX model 1TB black is in fact a single platter drive with 10-20% better performance than the single platter blue. The remainder of the FZEX linup is still based on ~800GB platters as I understand.

For the 1TB system/backup drives, I think the competition is between the 5 year warranty WD FZEX, vs the hybrid SSD-caching 3-year warranty Seagate ST1000DX001, as either are typically about the same price, and either would make a great system drive.

For the 3-4TB drives, keep in mind that WD Black is their "enterprise" drive (its just marketed much better to consumers), and as such, you should check pricing against drives like the ST3000NC002. (Seagates 1TB/platter 3TB "value" enterprise drive.) The seagate may actually be preferable with the newer, higher density platters, though they still only have a 3 year warranty. Should be about the same price as the black in the 3TB size. The 3TB FZEX is based on 3x800GB platters with some minor short-stroking from what I can figure. The 4TB FZEX is a 5 platter drive.

If you'd rather not spring for an enterprise drive for the 3-4TB sizes, the ST3000DM001 and ST4000DM000 are also based on 1TB/platter density and represent superb value IMO, though the latter is a slower spindle speed, if it matters to you.

The WD Black are to overpriced for a storage drive imo. Makes more sense to use them as system drive.

I have a Barracuda, too and am really satisfied with it.

Do you have your storage in your system or in a network drive?
Would consider the WD Red if the later is the case.
