Had a new build going great then everything imaginable went wrong

Thread Starter
Hey everyone I am currently looking for help with a new system im building for my cousin. We manage to get it all working and windows was installing. It got to the point where it says finishing installing windows and totally froze. From there things just got worse and worse. We ended up restarting the computer and for a while our only problem was that we could no longer get it to boot into bios so that we could boot from the disc and try to re-partition the drive. This led to us deciding to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for a bit and putting it back while disconnecting both the hard drive and the dvd drive. After we did this the computer would no longer turn on at all, it has since been flashing the CPU phase 1 status light on the motherboard and it smells like something is definitely getting fried. The indicator also sometimes lights up and flashes all four of the CPU lights as it did initially when everything was running fine. We noticed we had a bit extra thermal compound but wiped that away. We are currently using the msi 970A-G46 motherboard, does anyone have any experience with these sorts of issues? Is it possible the procesor may be overheating or the motherboard is shorting from the extra compound? Why would it work briefly and suddenly stop?

List full system specifications. We may have insight for you to consider, but it sounds like the magic smoke came out of something and it will have to be replaced/exchanged.

This is far fetched but is it poasible when removing or installing the battery you discharged a static shock to the motherboard completely frying it. I had the 970a-g46 it was a decent board got one for sale if yours did fry
