4k textures in Skyrim, here I come.

To bad Skyrim's limit is somewhere in the 2.7gb vram range. Beyond that many people face game instability... unless something has changed in the last few months.
What causes this limit? With ENBoost and Sheson's Memory Patch Skyrim people can run ugrids 19 (count em!) and I've personally reached 2.9GB in Wyrmstooth without instability.

But I can't think of games apart from modded skyrim/hitman which could possibly use over 3GB, and as others have said for multi-monitor you'll be picking bigger and better cards.

I think it was just due to general instability of the Skyrim engine, I know there are several mods and patches, memory fixers, etc now that may help with this, but it was somewhat of a hard limit that many people ran up against. It may be more of a problem with those who are using the script heavy mods + huge texture replacers where the engine just can't handle it. Could be a non-issue now, with those memory patches though, I haven't modded the game for a long time lol.

OT: It really is a bit of a waste to put 6gb on this card. In most cases you will definitely hit the limit of the card's capabilities before hitting vram limit. Maybe it can be useful in some sort of distributed computing/mining or benching though.

Could you crossfire this card with a 3gb HD7970 GHZ edition ?

MSI - only 6GB ! biggrin.gif

Probably, but it'd only utilise 3gb of ram. Remember crossfire requires duplication of assets held in the ram. You can't duplicate 6GB of assets in 3GB of memory.

No thank you MSI, I do not need your extra VRAM. I already bought a standard 280X instead of a GTX 770 for the extra 1GB for future proofing, but I'm already thinking that was overkill because I will probably be short on GPU muscle way before VRAM with this card. I doubt going multi-monitor would change that, either. Sadly though, I know plenty of people who would buy this over a 290 because "**** 6GB VRAM MOST OP GRAPHICS CARD EVER!!!!!!!!!!!" (rather embarrassingly, i would have done that too about a year ago)

Isn't this more for triple/quad CFX users than single card? Everyone keeps saying that 6GB is useless for a single card.

I would prefer this in a 290.

I would buy it just to say I have 6GB vram lol

The card isn't powerful enough to push multi-monitor setups or a 4k display so I don't understand this decision. Wouldn't putting 6gb of memory on a 290 or 290x make more sense?

I have this card. Running Battlefield 4 in eyefinity on medium to high settings with 50-60 fps. So yeah.....

And how much VRAM are you using? What resolution?

3GB or 6GB, it wont matter when those junk fans fail. Both of my cards have flung oil everywhere and one fan refuses to spin. This is after three weeks of usage. Stay far far away.
