[AnandTech] AMD AM1 Platform Announced: Socketed Kabini - Page 5

this is fantastic news... Currently its very hard to find non-embedded (read: EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE) Kabini APUs for HTPCs.

Requiring board manufacturers to have 1 sku per CPU is extremely expensive , hence they charge more. TDP is higher on non BGA parts however.

That being said, http://www.seco.com/prods/boards/single-board-computer/secopitx-gx.html (custom credit card sized Kabini) would be awesome (but $$$)

Well it matches baytrail in cpu and destorys it in gpu but again Baytrail is matched against Kaveri and low power Kabine parts 25W is a joke anything above 15W should be running Kaveri. The thing with these chips however is that they cost next to nothing due to their small footprint.

Mullins and Beema upgrade is something I'm really excited about especially for 20 hour battery life notebooks redface.gif

I think the point is to make a low cost and low power PCs

so it's exactly the same as all prior APUs but, on a different socket?

It'll make it's way into every office and company reducing power bills for cheap. Replacing thousands and thousands of dated Intel terminals for updated new equipment meeting the needs of startup or upgrading offices. It's a sector Intel has forgotten. It's A LOT OF MONEY!

Not really feasible due to size constraints.

Also since tablets and netbooks / ultrabooks these days are designed to be thin and light manufacturers only use enough heatsinks to do the job for the stock chip. They would not want an end user upgrading to a higher heat output CPU which would cause overheating, problems with the vrm etc.

It'd be possible if AMD and tablet makers worked together to keep heat in the same area on one specific thin laptop style socket, but there's no real need nor want for it.

Same thing with their higher end desktop APU's. I understand they don't have the ability to compete with Intel at the high end, but i think a lot of people would be more interested in these APU's if they were 8 core parts.

It'd be awesome if they sold one with the same specs as the PS4s APU.

You mean a version with Puma cores and volcanic islands and HDL yeah that would be really great!
