So far looks to be guaranteed Hynix (or better?), but comes with a higher price tag than the PCS+ and only comes in 290x form.

One might say this is the best 290x, but it's also incredibly more expensive in order to hold that title. Basically I see no reason why you wouldn't get a PCS+ instead because of cost along with the Tri-X (assuming you can find a good price on it, though I guess the same goes for the lightning).

because of how this card should perform under ln2 compared to any other 290x card. Thats why you would pay more. This card was not designed with air in mind, the cooler was, but the card wasnt.

Should being the key word, no one has really pushed it to its limits other than the guru3d review, and they aren't on LN2. If the card is hitting 65c under load, it would at the most see 75c-80c when overclocked, meaning temperature isn't a constraint, the chip itself is. I suppose the guru3d review only had it at 100Mv, which they were still getting what one might consider impressive clocks for that amount of voltage.

I think you're right though, it might still might surpass all the others for the most extreme OCing situations, but no one has put it under those conditions yet.

1400mhz @ 1.4V according to MSI.
i wonder if that 1.4v is measured with a DMM or if they used a software to read it, software voltage readings have been known to be off...way off lol.

I belive it was measured with V-check points, it is the MSI lightning after all

lets hope so, at least it would be an accurate reading then. 1.4v for 1400mhz sounds pretty good to me.

Does reference really need that much voltage for 1.1ghz?

it could just be the card they used, silicon lottery and all that. Maybe msi really is binning their cores.

That's (1.35) the voltage I run my 290 at when clocked at 1250/1650.

What's this ln2 I'm seeing in previous posts?

Short answer: silicon lottery , they want to portray the MSI Lightning in the best way possible so they use a piss poor sample "worst case".
They do that in pharmaceutical industry too where they give patients half the dose of the comparison drug. tongue.gif

Guru3D
+100Mv got Guru3D's Windforce 3X with the mediocre cooler to 1150Mhz (as well as the Powercolor PCS+)
+75Mv got their MSI Gaming to 1189 MHz
Reference boost voltage is 1.11v , but some BIOS have different base "stock" voltage
----
PCPer got 1225 MHz on the Tri-X at +200 mV (1.297v)
HardOCP needed 1.35V just to hit 1115Mhz on the ASUS , 1130Mhz on the XFX with +50mV (1.273v)

Liquid Nitrogen, for record setting OCs

MSI has a LN2 BIOs with no limits (no over current, no temp limit) so you can go nuts with voltage
