PC Power-On Issue

Thread Starter
Every time I go to boot up my PC it turns off after ~3-5 seconds. It POSTs, shows the blue Windows logo for ~1 second, then turns off. I press the Power button again and it stays on - no issues, problems, etc during use. This has been happening for a little over a week now and has me stumped. I use my PC for 10+ hours per day. I've tried turning off Fast Boot which was a suggestion from a friend, but that made no difference. I haven't made any BIOS changes other than the Fast Boot change in several months. I would think the PSU is fine since there don't seem to be any issues during use - gaming, Prime95, idling, etc. I've made no changes to Windows regarding Power Settings, software installations, etc in this span of time.

This happens from both cold and warm boot.

Any ideas?

Are you overclocking? Sounds like a bad OC, or a maybe a memory issue... if it isn't a BIOS setting.

Are there any Bios upgrades that you can do?

Have you done windows updates or other drivers updates lately? Any new hardware?

Have your checked your CPU cooler to make sure it is clean and flowing air?

Try re-seating your Ram?

have you tried setting BIOs to Default... or clearing CMOS entirely?

I'm not OC'ing - this chip doesn't allow it. Only allows upping the Turbo bins +4 - which I have done, and added an extra 0.4V (either 0.4 or 0.04, can't remember exactly).

Computer has been just fine for over a year up until the last week.

Plenty of updates and driver updates - doubt that would cause the PC to shut off ~5 seconds after pressing power button since those aren't even loaded yet.

CPU cooler is working just fine. RPM's are good, connection is secure, etc. Like I said, I use the PC 10+ hours per day with no problems except what I mentioned in the OP.

---

I'll try re-seating the RAM.

Haven't tried clearing CMOS since I don't wanna lose settings, but I'll try it as well.

Will update with a new post when I have the time to do it.

I tried clearing CMOS first since that was the easiest and all is clear now. No more power-on issues. Thanks!

Good! Glad to hear it is fixed! I hate clearing CMOS... but it is pretty easy to put back together usually.

That is usually a BIOS (or OC) issue... and memory can do it also.

I have seen windows updates and driver updates do weird stuff like this also. Once upon a time, a windows update rendered half of a clients Windows 98 PC's unable to to login to the domain... and MS was not very helpful.... lol! That one was a riot!

Driver updates can cause similar issues too... if memory addressing, or interrupts change.. and they cause a conflict.

Mainly I was just trying to get a feel for your PC (what if you had said..."nah.. I don't do those stupid updates!", lol) I have heard that one before too!

The reason I asked about the CPU cooler is because the on/off thing can also be caused by overheating or fan issues on your cooler. My girlfriend used to never clean her pc... and with cats and no filters, that is a bad thing. Cooler was jammed with hair when I met her. Now she has filters... but she also checks her PC occasionally.

just some rationales for my questions above....

My case came with filters on the front fans and I'm glad for it. I really need to get in there and clean it, but I just don't have any space to do it. Like, we used to have a dining room table, but since we never used it we got rid of it to make room in the kitchen. So now the only space I have is my desk which is an L-shaped desk, so it's not much room at all. =\
