First time water cooler here, will need some advice on loop, and PSU

Hi All,

Here I am again, this time, I am ready to take the "plunge". This because my wife is sick and tired of the rather loud R9 290's reference cooler. First things first, I will list the parts here that I am planning to use for my brand new custom loop, this loop will only cool the 290's. I have an aio for the 3770k and this one hums along just fine at 4.5Ghz.

Be aware that I have planned out this part list based on the case(chaser mk-1) that I currently have, so there are some restrictions when it comes to rad size for example.

*Updated*Used Parts:
  • 1x Alphacool NexXxoS XT45 2*180mm
  • 1x EK-Supremacy - Nickel
  • 2x EK-FC R9-290X DCII (Original CSQ) - Nickel
  • 1x MCP355
  • 2x silverstone SST-AP182 18CM
  • 1x Phobya Balancer 150 ... I broke the aqualis res, probably because I really liked it...

I am now pretty worried that my PSU 750w corsair TX v2 will not be able to take this, I am also worried that I have not selected a combination of parts that will work, as I am a complete noob to watercooling(please be gentle ;-)).

I have decided to get a Coolermaster V1000 due to the stellar reviews this unit gets.

The schema looks as follows, please advice:

*Updated* Some pictures:

I hope to get some valuable advice as always,

Regards,

Brain

You can run those cards with just (1) rad, but it won't be a good Delta. Is there any way you can add another rad?

Keep in mind... I tend to over rad when I can so I don't have to run my fans fill tilt to achieve a good OC and fairly quiet rig.

I'd be comfortable with a 1000 watt PSU. With my 3930k + 290, it averages around 611 watts on BF4.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply, that pretty much confirms that my 750w PSU will not be very suited for this setup. I will probably switch to a coolermaster v1000 then.(Or a superflower leadex cause they are sexy)

Regarding the rad space, I think I can possibly add another 240mm rad inside the case(In front of drive bays, if necessary, but I will need to measure). Would this improve the delta significantly? Or is an extra 240mm rad not worth it due to the limited wattage it can get rid of.

Cheers,

Brain

Have decided to add some more info as to what I mean, could someone please check this schema(is this something that I can do and would work well?).

Will add the schema, and updated components to the OP for clarity.

Cheers.

Update:

Disassembled my PC in the evening and noticed that I can fit 1 extra rad(2x120mm, or 2x140mm max, 30mm thickness) at the front of the case. I don't know if this will be necessary as I will initially not be cooling my CPU within the loop. The rad on the top(2x180mm) will fit with minor modifications to the case(I'll need to get the dremel out ;-)).

Cheers.

Just an update, all parts have arrived, and the first thing I noticed is the rad size, this thing is huge o.O I was expecting that 180x2 would stay under 400mm in length but it does not.

Because the top of my case(screw holes, fan cutouts, and mostly everything else) doesn't have any redeeming element that actually fits. I will cut out a contour with 10mm on each side, and then cutout a custom 1mm thick steel plate with correct cutouts, screw holes, etc for my purpose, and bolt this cutout to the contour, that could look pretty neat if done well. This will mean that the plastic cover on my case will no longer fit, but that is not actually something I cared much for anyway.

In the picture I posted previously the rad will go on top and not beneath the top superstructure. I will start posting some pics once case modifications are done. It should not be too hard to get the custom stuff done, so I am not overly worried. It is however still an exciting amount of work that I didn't originally plan for. Guess that the thermaltake chaser MK-I isn't really made for sizeable rads biggrin.gif

Interesting choice, i don't see many using Barrow fittings. Do update how they perform.

^ Well, I live in China, and Barrow seems to have the most widely available compression fittings and other WC parts here. That is why I went with them, ease to replace, etc. I've received some batches of fittings already and so far they look good, solid workmanship. Will let you know if this initial impression survives once I've actually installed them.

Update: For the top plate(large bracket), I will bolt them to the original top with some blue acorn nuts(The theme is blue so), which I hope will look sort of cool: http://s7d4.scene7.com/is/image/Turn5/99258?$s7product$

Very nice. Saw them on moddiy.com and they're considerably cheaper than the other brands of fittings. I know in WC, you get what you pay for but it's just interesting to see others use different brands

So, few things have changed since originally starting this thread, actually, a lot of things have changed due to poor planning, and even poorer execution. I paid my learning fees :-)

First off: Case... Yeah, so since it didn't really fit(The radiator), I decided to do "some modding", and "some modding" I did... I basically ended up screwing up the top of my case in ways that I didn't imagine was possible. In the end the result of my modding of the top of the chaser mk-I case looked so abysmal, that I went case shopping. This time prepared with all my knowledge, I wanted a case that actually has the dual 180mm drill holes(Believe it or not, drilling these guys sucks hard on flat steel surfaces) and that basically doesn't require ANY modding.

So, I went on the internet(an ever dangerous place for actual information) and based on some review(yet another stupid decision), and Silverstone's faq(you could get creative with a magicool dual 180mm), I bought a Silverstone Raven 04. All happy and excited, the first thing I did, was to completely tear it apart, to check if my radiator would fit snugly. As you can guess by the progress of this project, and to the tune of my decision making process in this entire ordeal IT DIDN'T FIT. This basically discouraged me for a week or so to even look at it, after which I looked at all the nice watercooling gear laying in my work room and said I have to make heaven and earth move to MAKE this fit. If anything, the result will probably be a bit original right redface.gif

Off I went with my trusty dremel to remove the obstacles at the bottom of this case, preventing me from mounting my(rather large) radiator. And finally some happy times ahead, lo and behold, it now 'fits'. Didn't have 1mm of extra space, but a tight fit, is still a fit... Little did I know(I know my intelligence and excitement seem to have inverse relationships) that with stoppers on the drain port, it did not... Another short lived victory, at this point in time, I was probably angry enough to toss the entire thing out of the window and call it the day. I however persevered to do my rad justice, and got the dremel out, again... This time I "carefully"(Hahaha really...) cut away the size of the drain port out of the bottom of the case. All in all, job done, excellent result, much wow. Except...

This meant the feet of the case did no longer... well fit... The feet of the case on the rv04 are of the same flimsy plastic the front door is made out of, so I just broke the internal brackets off, which nicely hided the drainport through the chassis and made my radiator look like it fitted in there "naturally". I then re-attached the feet of the chassis with some heavy duty double sided tape(at certain points, so it is removable). At this point in time I was extremely proud of myself because I did it, I managed to fit an Alphacool nexxxos xt45 dual 180mm rad in the Silverstone Raven rv04 case.

Minor point, the 45mm thickness of aforementioned radiator is around 1mm too much for the (removable) motherboard tray to fit back into the case... You can here me coming, yup, trusty dremel, who really needs the extra 5mm at the side of the motherboard tray Silverstone thought we needed. After this was done, motherboard tray happily mounted(with motherboard, which is a definite plus). I am now rather finally in the stages where I am wiring things up, and everything seems to finally fit, I dremelled myself a bracket fitting my 4 drives(2x3.5", 2x2.5") and feel good. Upcoming now is reservoir and pump placement which will probably require some more holes in the motherboard tray, which by this time, I am fairly used to...

Just wanted to share my story of how little planning with expensive components can end up in a little disaster... I have also updated the component list with stuff that is now actually mounted. I will add pictures once ready, but right now I am in a race to get to the loop assembly and leak testing part biggrin.gif
