Reservoir Anxiety

Howdy All:

I have a question concerning reservoirs: Does it really make a difference in which one I get? I am more into aesthetics, so I want to get one that looks pretty nice, but there are just so many options available. I am trying to keep away from the stuff that's pretty common, so I am trying not to think about the "usual suspects" when it comes to thinking about which parts I am going to get for my near-future build.

Some ideas that I have for reservoirs are:

XSPC Single 5.25" Bay Reservoir (Aluminum Front) (wont be my first choice as it's one of those 'pretty common' ones)
http://www.xoxide.com/single-bay-reservoir.html

AquaTube G1/4 Delrin Black (My very close second choice)
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/aqg1deblwifi.html

Phobya Balancer 150 Reservoir (Black Nickel) (I REALLY LIKE THIS ONE, MY #1 CHOICE)
http://www.amazon.com/Phobya-Balancer-150-Reservoir-Nickel/dp/B003TWFBSC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_pc_9?ie=UTF8&refRID=1966KCSXC5ESKD1V0X2D

XSPC D5 Photon 270 Reservoir/D5 Vario Pump Combo
http://www.amazon.com/XSPC-Photon-Reservoir-Vario-Combo/dp/B00FJHFREI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_pc_50?ie=UTF8&refRID=1PJR1FEM25Q7Y0MA0G1P

Does it really make a difference if it's a pump/res combo or buy the two separate?

I notice that lots of reservoirs have different capacities, will that matter? I understand that running 1/2" tubing is best, so that's what I'm planning on using.

At the moment, I only plan on cooling my CPU and GPU. I don't do any overclocking either and don't plan to. I'm not thinking about radiators at the moment, but I'll most likely go with a 240 or two and/or the next higher size, depending on what fits in or around the HAF 932.

My specs:
Cooler Master HAF 932
MG Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z5S Z87 (just bought this board and will be used once I start building my wc system)
Intel i4770k (350mhz)
Gigabyte Radeon R9 290X WindForce 3X OC 4GB (1040mhz)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (to be replaced by the EK R9 block and backplate)

My cooling plans will include:
EK R9-290X VGA Liquid Cooling Block
EK R9-290X VGA Liquid Cooling Backplate

Oh yes, anybody know of any "out of the ordinary" reservoirs out there? I plan on using a Black & Green concept, thinking of UFOs smile.gif so I will be using Green LED lighting.

I will start a new thread once I really start planning and building my system.

I vote D5 photon.

If I could do it again I would have 2 of them.

You could also grab an aliens theme ring off the web and use it as your kill coil. tongue.gif

don't purchase the phobya res, I bought one from Side Winder and it came in with the acrylic cracked and the base and top all scratched and tarnished, I returned it and they sent another and it was even worse. Those lazy people didn't even bother to check the box before it shipped. Sent that one back too and asked for a refund. Was not impressed at all.

This opinion I think depends on where you plan to put it.

I would plan to put it in my case, not in my ***. rolleyes.gif

Just found this info, seems that pump/res combos take a performance hit when compared to standalones (at least according to this guy).

http://www.xtremerigs.net/2013/11/21/xspc-photon-reservoir-with-integrated-d5-vario-pump/

Something to keep in mind :-)

Probably because the D5's stock tops are usually pretty good to begin with.

I have no doubt the photon as a top isnt the best performer, but I think its the most sleek and UFO-like res.

I would have 2 of them now because my loop is coming to the point where is is going to go beyond the capabilities of a single D5 anyways.

Ive already got my Koolance pmp-450S on a 24v step up. Eventually ill be getting another 450S and matching reskit for it. once they ( if ever ) fail me ill be making the move to higher pressure pumps anyways.

Didnt initially plan to add so much stuff. rolleyes.gif

They've also made some that apparently out perform the stock D5 top with separate res Here, but they're not much to look at, take up 2 bays, are really the most PITA to bleed you can possibly have and transmit a lot of noise/vibration to the case (from personal experience).

I'd just go with what you think looks best. The difference is small unless you're close to "overloading" your loop with many blocks and rads.

That's me, once I start working on my computer, I don't stop until everything in it is brand new smile.gif but I've been stung by the watercooling bug and that's my next project. This will be my very first attempt at it and really want it to look nice to show off. I'd be the only one out of everybody that I know that would have a watercooled system :-)

This one caught my eye as well:
