AFAIK if it's only the engine coolant radiator it won't have much else than sediments unless the head gasket blew

Lots of guys were doing it back when I started WCing 15 years ago.
But they were not using car rads, they were using car heater cores.
Franckly, it's a bit ghetto, and not exactly the best idea.
It forces you to use lots of additives to prevent galvanic corrosion, and additives lessen your water's ability to cool.

Get a 1080 rad instead for ultimate performance. And it will look a lot better in your room than a car rad.

lubricating agents keep pumps happy
surfactants make water "wetter"

the loss of cooling effect from using a bit of glycol is far outclassed by the epic surface area of a car / truck (genset?) radiator. bigger IS better.

My point was you could use a glycol based coolant to avoid the excessive additives in automotive coolant and still get sufficient corrosion inhibition.

Well, inless we are talking about some probable exotic car, that rad would be made of aluminum.
Aside from the corrosion/additive isssue already discussed, aluminum is far less effective at transfering heat.
Maybe not a big deal when dealing with a coolant above boiling point temps (very high delta T) but when dealing with a dT of 5 to 10° C, that's a different story.

So aluminum is less performant, and it requires additives that further decreases your performance.
Than there is the FPI count of tge rad itself. Probably designed for a rather loud rad fan. Hard to silence that in your living room/office.

Lotsa guys doing that 15-10 years ago. Not so much today. There's gotta be a reason for it.

His radiator is 400mm x 400mm and he's using it for a single CPU. I think he'll be fine with aluminum as far as performance.

re: A: everyone uses aluminum in cars. copper's theoretical advantage doesn't pan out with soldering and other metals. Aluminum is easy to machine, and cheap(ish).

B: 10-15 years ago, it was all custom. now, it's all bolt-together. that's the main reason.

Not really my friend. I started with WC 15 years ago using a Thermaltake external radiator. A big 120.5 cooling tower that looked like a speaker tower. And in big bold proud letters on the box: Copper heatsink and aluminum radiator.

Even back then, there were lotsa bolt-on rads, external rads, and so on. But many, if not most were all aluminum.

And back then, I had to walk ten miles to go to school. In 10 feet of snow, with no shoes. Life was hard in those days sonny boy. biggrin.gif
