3x R9 290X Crossfire - Low FPS / Image flashes / Artifacts / Breaks

Hello there everybody,

I've been trying to post this here and share it with you guys for a few days now but I just didin't had the time. biggrin.gif
Since the day I saw the R9 290X that I wanted to get one, and so I did. First thing I did when I got it was to test it to see if everything was okay, I did some benchmarks and played some games and I was amazed by its performence. I decided to do tri-fire to see how it would work and then watercool it. tongue.gif

When I got the 3 290x instaled I downloaded and installed the latest beta amd driver so I could fully use mantle, or so I was expecting. Before that I was using the single 290x with the latest standart driver (not the beta one), wich was mantle free as far as I knew.

I activated crossfire, benchmarked those 3 cards and this is where It gets "interesting". The benchmark score for 3 290x was really low, even for 2 390x it would be low. rolleyes.gif

I then tried to play bf4 to see the performence and I was shocked! I was playing with very low fps, like 30 / 40 and with massive breaks to 20 fps. Also, the image would blink/flash sometimes, show artifacts and freeze/break a lot. I was not happy with this and I decided to hold the watercooling just for now. I did some digging and from what I discovered this is driver related and I guess I just have to wait 'till it is fixed.

I just wanted to share it with you guys and see what you guys think of this. smile.gif
Anyone has/had this issue? Any advices?

If anybody has something to say, please feel free to do so! thumb.gif

Cheers,

you need to test each card to find out if any is/are defective.

BF4? i use 14.2 beta for BF4 with one 290 and my i7 stock HT off. have to oc my i7 to 4.5 if i switch to DX11. i suggest you use this driver with mantle.

you do know that each of these 290X is every bit as powerful as a titan, right?

Hi there mate,

Sorry I forgot to mention that I tested every card alone in every PCI-E slot and everything was OK thumb.gif
My FX9590 with a single 290x plays bf4 like a champ with the beta drivers and with the other ones aswell... So I really believe this issue is regarding the xfire in the beta drivers.

Yes, I do know biggrin.gif

try with only 2 cards with 14.2 and mantle?

you can ask Sgt. Bilko here . . .

he has a similar setup.

I also did and I get the exact same problem...

Is it possible that my CPU and/or board simply can't power/use 3 290x? O.O

That just came to my thoughts!

Have you checked the temps and core clocks? They could be throttling because they are too close.

I haven't checked the second and third card temps. Just the first one and it plays at about 94ºC, wich is normal. As for the rest of them, having the XFire enabled they just won't spin 'till they are in use, wich is when a game launches, or a benchmark. Having it that way I think that if the problem is temperature it shouldn't happen right away when they start and are "cold" but yes a bit after when they heat up. Still, I'll check the temps and clock of all 3 while gaming and in crossfire when I get home.

Another thing, If I disable the crossfire and the "ritmo de quadros" (this is portuguese, I believe it is the same as frame pacing) in the catalyst control center, all 3 cards are working with the fans spinning at all times and If i game like this or benchmark, the results are great and it works like a charm exactly the same as having just one, because the other 2 aren't doing anything ... just providing room heat biggrin.gif

The R9 290x's downclock to keep temps under 95C so if you are at that window then it is entirely possible that they are downclocking really low to keep under 95C. Thats my thoughts anyways.

What benchmark were you using and can you show us via a monitoring software like GPU Z or Afterburner if your cards are hitting the 95c cap. If they are air cooled and sitting right next to each other chances are most of it not all are downclocking as others said to keep the 95c max temp.
