What to do with old netbook

Thread Starter
I've got an old Asus EeePC 904HA that I bought in 2008. It served me quite well through college as a note taking, homework doing, coding, and engineering simulation computer that was very portable. After I replaced it with my current laptop it kind of sat around for the last 3 years with no usage. Now I am debating installing Linux on it as it runs much better with Linux (from a flash drive) than it does its XP Home install. The only thing is is that I have a lot of software that I no longer have the install media for currently installed on the netbook.

Any thoughts on what to do?

Not a bad suggestion, but it doesn't really help me decide whether I should hold onto the XP install on it due to applications I haven't used in 3 years but may need down the road again. Or if I should just blow that away and install Linux onto it since it runs so much smoother than my XP install currently does.

Wifi was working great at home in a live environment. It'd be interesting to see as well how much it slows down when installed on the HDD (5400rpm i believe) instead of running over USB2.0. Anyone have any experience with that transition and if there is any OS speed degradation.

USB 2.0 Is only like 12.5 Megabytes per second. If the hdd is on sata then it would be at least 4-5 times faster i would think.

Keep XP if you have important programs installed and missing the installation media.
Just remember that Microsoft will stop supporting XP next month (April). This means that any new vulnerabilities discovered will not be patched.

Personally, a linux live distro installed on an USB drive seems like something I should try. Just be sure to use a decent USB drive and not a cheapo USB drive like the type that are handed out for free at conferences and expos. Also, most 5400 RPM hard drives have terrible 4K R/W performance (which hurts OS performance). This means that a good USB flash should be able to beat a 5400 HDD when it comes to accessing random 4K files required by the OS.

USB 1.0 maxes out at 12 MB/s, NOT USB 2.0. USB 2.0 maxes out at around 30 MB/s in my experience.

It will likely run better on a good USB drive.
Hard drives have really bad latency (access time) compared to good SSDs and USB flash drives.
