Are you talking about the layout of the buttons or the actual function, because there's a switch underneath that allows you to change the function of the buttons from numberpad to 123, so in regards to function I wouldn't say this is by default.

That's a pretty silly reason to dislike a form of software, most especially because most software bundled with hardware does this (AMD, NVidia, Corsair, I can go on). It's hardly in your face either.
Cannot comment on any issues with the sensor. Never had any. Only issues I have had with Razer products overall was with hardware detection with my Naga & double clicking with my Copperhead, of which a firmware update fixed both issues flawlessly. My Naga has had some serious abuse and it's still going strong.
