Running a 280x and 4870 together - driver issues.

Hey all,

I recently replaced my 4870 with an r9 280x, which is fantastic. I'd like to be able to use the old card to power my additional displays, so that I can send all the 280x power to my 1440p gaming monitor, but I'm having issues getting both cards to work at the same time.

With one card connected, I can install the driver for that card just fine. However, when I plug in the 2nd card only the first card continues to work. When I attempt to update the driver for the 2nd card, rebooting usually results in neither driver working and I'm back to square one (driver sweep, reboot with 1 gpu, reinstall driver).

Device manager reports various errors which all sound like they are related to the driver not working (device reported a problem, old driver still in memory, driver could not be loaded, etc.), although it does quite clearly recognize a "4800 series" and "r9 280 series" display adapter.

Any idea what I could do to get this setup working properly?

You will not be able to use the 4870 with the r9 280x and the latest Catalyst drivers.  The 4870 only runs on the legacy drivers, which is not compatible with the 280x.  There may be some custom drivers out there that have support for 4xxx series GPU's.

I managed to install the legacy drivers side-by-side in the end. Maybe it was just some lucky combination of drivers that didn't overwrite each other - but installing the legacy drivers for the 4870 through the device manager seemed to work.

I haven't rebooted since, so we'll see if it still works tonight....

Thanks for your help and the link. +thumb.gif

Glad to hear it's up and running. Hopefully it sticks and CCC or Windows doesn't flip out when you reboot. thumb.gif

It flipped out frown.gif

Had a long loading screen at the windows logo, some explorer.exe crashes, flash didn't work, VLC didn't work, etc.. Not a happy machine, although it did have both monitors powered by the correct cards!

I think I'll try a driver-sweep and some different combinations of drivers and see if I can get something stable.
