The 2014 & 2018 figures are predictions.

Combined with 68% growth in tablet sales(including 14% Ipad growth and 121% Android growth). It is interesting trends indeed.

What I'd like to see is the changes in PC component sales. I bet that is on the rise which means those who grew tired of the prebuilt systems have opted to build or have one built.

This.

Obviously tablet sales are eating into PC/Laptop sales, but I would be interested in numbers on component sales. I would bet a lot of people are into building their own, which is also taking away from the shipped numbers.

That would factor into the desktop numbers, but I think the bigger point about those figures is the decline in notebooks shipments(bigger by % than the decline in desktops sales). Desktop PC aren't really competing with tablets in any way.

Component sales are most likely on the rise but is it enough to counteract the loss of PC sales? I would venture it's not.

Exactly, those sounds like OEM statistic.

And the Steam user base grows by 10 million in three months, that's faster than the adoption rate of the PS4.

Desktop sales are falling because nobody needs a new one anymore, they're still good enough. Intel, Nvidia, and AMD have made such massive improvements in the past decade that PC hardware 3-4 years old is still fine. When we start seeing 4k screens becoming more mainstream, we'll see another push for faster hardware.

Netbook sales are being replaced my tablet sales.

And GPU sales (AMD) up 9001%.....

I suspect even if we could get component sales figures, custom built pc's would still be a very small portion of the OEM/desktop market. I guess if everyone wants to survey their family/friends/people they know immediately you can get an idea of the saturation. How many prebuilts vs custom desktops are in your circle of connections?

Out of everyone I know, when it comes to desktops
Prebuilt - 0%
Custom/Built by someone they know- 100%

Have you guys seen the desktops offered by OEM's lately. Their garbage, they have not kept up with the times. The All in One desktops are the only ones I could see people buying into and even then the hardware is not good. HP has an All in One desktop powered by Kabini and one powered by Tegra. If that doesn't say something about the current state of the "desktop" market from OEM's, I don't know what does.
