8320 OC Results, on $25 Cooler

Thread Starter
Purpose:

1.) Compare New Cooler to Stock
2.) Achieve the highest OC on lowest Volt

Testing System:

CPU: FX-8320
Cooler: Logysis "Ice Wind" Cooler ( Cool Name Huh?)
Thermal Compound: Prolimatech Pro-pk2
Fans: 2 x MASSCOOL 81CFM
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P (8+2 Power Phase)
HDD: Samsung 840 Pro 256gb
RAM: HyperX Blu 2x4gb DDR3 1600
GPU: Asus 560ti
Case: Thermaltake V3
PSU: Rosewill Capstone 550watt

Testing Software:

HWMonitor
Prime 95
CPU-z
Passmark

1.) Compare New Cooler to Stock

The cooler I bought was $20 after instant coupon. It had no reviews, and was from Logysis. Ehh, why not?
The real reason I bought it was for the design. Many of the more efficient coolers have their heatpipes organized as in this cooler, and to me it seems more logical.

Quite simple to do, I installed the processor with the stock heatsink and fan, ran prime95 and recorded temps.

All settings stock.

Prime95 ran for ~ 10 minutes and temperatures recorded, unless otherwise stated.

Stock Cooler:
Min: 27c
Max: 57 C

Stock Voltage 1.368v, 18x220 = 3.96ghz, All power saving settings turned off. Prime95 ran for ~ 1 minute before temperatures became too high for my liking
Stock Cooler:
Min:28c
Max:64C

Flash Forward...

Seems as though AMD sent it with a little too much paste from the factory.

You know this thing is Asian when they have a cat on the box, and a lady bug as a car is the modded look. rolleyes.gif

Decently flat.

The reason I bought this cooler. The design thumbsupsmiley.png

Hardly Fit, this thing is pretty large.

New CPU Cooler with Prolimatech TI installed with stock Fan from box, Ran prime95 and recorded temps.

Logysis Cooler: Stock

Min:18c
Max:50c

Logysis Cooler:

3.96ghz (220x18)
Min: 18c
Max: 60c

Next Installed Two fans in push pull, ran prime95 and recorded temps.

Logysis Cooler + 2 Fans:

Stock
Min:17c
Max:48c

3.96ghz (220x18)
Min: 16c
Max: 58c

So far, was not too impressed by this cooler. Could keep the cpu cool while idle and stock, but once prime95 taxed it, it heated up quickly.
Next I wanted to find out what this chip's limits were, so it was back into the BIOS.
For some reason my motherboard had stock voltage for my chip being 1.4v. Found out why my temps were so high yessir.gif.
Bumping that down to a better 1.3v with VDroop making it 1.248v under load, I went back to test.

All tests from here out are down with the Logysis Cooler + 2 Fans

3.96ghz (220x18)
Min: 16c
Max: 47c

Nice and cool! biggrin.gif

Happy with these results, I lowered the voltage even lower to 1.285v with VDroop making it 1.225v under load. I also upped
the multiplier to 18.5 resulting in 4.07ghz

4.07ghz (220x18.5)
Min:11c
Max:43c

Not sure if the minimum is correct as it is around 61f in my apartment.

At this point I set my LLC to Medium (Poor options in BIOS) or 50%. With my voltage set at 1.275v I saw my Vcore
under load at 1.26v. This was the best I could get from my options. So I pressed on. This time at 4.18ghz

4.18ghz (220x19)
Min:11c
Max:49c

Again, I don't believe my apartment is 52f cool.gif

Getting to 4.29ghz required a bump to 1.3v or 1.285v after Vdroop

4.29ghz (220x19.5)
Min: 10c
Max:49c

Still great temps, never passing 50c, or 44c while playing Crysis 3.

Bumping the voltage to 1.3125v (1.308v) and the multi to 20 netted 4.4ghz

4.40ghz (220x20)
Min:11c
Max:49c

Or so I thought, I didn't notice until posting this that some workers failed while testing. This OC seems to be stable
for Crysis 3 and BF3 but for all intents and purposes, it was not stable. mad.gif

Getting to 4.5ghz was quite a bit harder. After seeing the BIOS screen more than my Windows Desktop, I finally got it stable at
1.356v or 1.344 after VDroop. Temps went up accordingly with the increase.

4.51ghz (220x20.5)

Min:13c
Max:58c

Currently this is where I have stopped. I will definitely be tinkering with it more and may possibly reseat my
heatsink, as I botched the landing while seating it. (Stupid sausage fingers doh.gif )

Benchmarks:

Procedure:
I ran each overclock through passmark 3 times to record an average and max, while recording the SingleThreaded
score.

Why are you using anything Logisys, and why are you using Passmark as a benchmark test? xD

Last I checked the only thing Logisys was good for was cold cathode tubes.

Well if you look at any of the best air coolers, such as the Noctua NH-D14 or the SilverStone Heligon HE01, you will see they have their heatpipes going through the fins in the same manner as the Logysis.
There were no reviews, and it was $20 before fans. So I went for it. As you can see, it is working pretty well, and I am happy with the results.

As for Passmark, I just like it because I believe it is a good test, and Cpuboss has most every processor tested and with a score for it. Makes for easy comparing to anything I want biggrin.gif

If you would like me to run some other benchmark and we could compare scores, I would be happy to do so thumb.gif

Not knockin ya, just surprised that Logisys actually makes what appears to be a decent heatpipe direct touch air cooler. I always thought of them like Rosewill, an el cheapo generic off brand to be avoided.

A lot of people dislike Passmark. If you want to, get Cinebench R15 and run that as an indicator of CPU performance at all of your various overclocks (and I can post mine for you to see if you want).

You are right, when he said top tier air he didn't mean a brand, he meant the best air cooling money can buy.

Actually that heatsink is made by Taiwanese based company DeepCool, don't know how Logisys got their rights. They make some pretty good stuff tbh. More recently they've gone by the GamerStorm name, like the monster GamerStorm Assassin. Installed that dual tower heatsink for a friend and it's pretty darn awesome.

No disrespect given, and none taken thumb.gif
I will download cinebench and run some benches, probably not all of the speeds as that would take a little while. Would you mind downloading passmark and reporting back your scores at 5.0ghz? I'm curious as to what your single threaded score is.

Didn't think so, just sounded worded weird.

More recently they've gone by the GamerStorm name, like the monster GamerStorm Assassin. Installed that dual tower heatsink for a friend and it's pretty darn awesome.

I did notice the "Deep Cool" logo embossed on the top fin. Looks like I got a good deal on one of heir products. Thanks for the info!

Yeah I knew it couldn't be sub ambient. Which temperature is the socket temp if any of these? The 27c?

I've run my chip at 5.2ghz for benching but it can't pass Cinebench, Cinebench crashes.

That's my highest Cinebench R15 score.

Can't really run it at a lower frequency or anything right now since my H100i is in RMA and I'm on the stock cooler at 4ghz.
