Do I need a better motherboard for a cheap gaming PC?

Hi there

(sorry for my bad english)

I'm completing my PC (LGA 1150). It's totally lightweight PC, sufficient for web browsing, watching movies and foremost playing games (not only the new ones). I don't need a multiple SATA or PCI-E, also things like the SLI, double or triple monitors, I don't need any extra features and I'm not interested in overclocking my CPU.

Here is my shopping list: B81 motherboard, Core i5-4440, 4 GB memory, WD Blue SATA3 1TB, Radeon R9 270 or GeForce GTX 660, SeaSonic S12II-520, and the rest of the small things. My screen resolution is 1440x900.

I noticed that it's hard to find any reviews of B81 motherboards, maybe it's because there's not much to review wink.gif

Anyways, I'm inclined to get one of these:

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4664

I know that I can't get four DDR3 slots, but I can live without it, two are enough.

I also know that I can't get PCI-E 3.0, because B81 have a PCI-E 2.0. But is it really that important for a graphics cards like the GTX 660 or R9 270??

Sometimes I read that the B81 (and B85) motherboards are "cheap" in terms of quality, but I think is mainly about the overclocking potential. Sure, I can't get 8-phase power design with HQ capacitors, but like I said, I'm not willing to overclock my CPU. As for sound card, I think the ALC887 or ALC892 will be fine, for my needs.

So my question is: do I need a H87 or Z87 motherboard for a typical affordable gaming PC??

Since I'm not interested in extra features and overclocking, I was thinking to save money on motherboard and buy a better graphics card (in this way I switched from HD7790 to R9 270 biggrin.gif ). Is B81 motherboard good or will it reduce performance in gaming??

You will most likely not notice any performance decreases with a B81 motherboard compared to an H87 or Z87. The PCI-e gen doesn't matter unless you are planning to crossfire/sli, so you should be fine.
