People need to stop spewing this windows 8/9 exclusivity thing because its getting old. MS did a big step in making DX 10 exclusive to vista due to whole new driver model. It HAD to be done. The area they failed in is that vista was a disaster at launch and even after several months of patches it still sucked as an OS. Direcx 12 will not be the new DX 10, its simply a restructure of current features found in 11.2 with maybe few new additions. Anything 7 and up will run it and its very likely any DX11 hardware will be able to use the majority of DX12's features.

If it's a variant of DX11.2 like you say then it won't be on Windows 7, since DX11.2 require WDDM 1.3 and DXGL 1.3

It will be exclusive to @least win 8.1, as it will obviously contain Tiled resources, which is dependent upon win 8.1

MS could still be dinks and limit it to a certain OS though...or possibly have a legitimate reason.

I think it should work on Win7 without anything special. Tiled Resources isn't a new concept...before DX11.2 it was something that had to be done in the graphics engine and they would easily get really heavy on memory usage if they weren't careful.

Dx11.2 just gives it a performance boost and cut down on memory since the API will let you stream a "Tile" or part of the texture rather than the entire texture at once. I am not a graphics engine programmer, but I think before the engine would just tell the API that what it was getting was the entire texture when it was just a tile and then just quickly hand it the rest of the tiles. So if tiles were used and didn't have DX11.2 or DX12 around it should just revert to the old way.

OpenGL also does something very similar, but to my knowledge it has never been used out side of a demo.
