You know what would be a more reasonable assumption about Repi's comment than "DX12 is mantle"? That he agreed with the person he was responding to. That he sees the similarities in the two APIs. That both of them are actually what he wanted, as he himself said that he went to everyone with the idea. With the way some people over on ocuk are reading into comments (and ignoring other clear as day statements) you'd think that they're some area51 enthusiasts.

DX12 and mantle have similar features because that's what devs asked for. Simple as that. Aside from the implementation of the features being different on many levels no one in the industry is claiming that DX12 is mantle. And the timeline for these APIs doesn't match that claim either. It's just charlie and some random forum users who wanted to see it happen.

I agree. OpenGL, Mantle, DirectX12 have both been working independently and in rough parallels to each other to improve their respective APIs and achieved similar goals. Not to mention, OpenGL options have been available before Mantle and no one really took advantage of any of it. It really boggles the mind how Mantle influenced pre-existing OpenGL capabilities before Mantle was even revealed. At best, Mantle might have pushed the revealing of DirectX12 earlier and got more attention towards the overall API CPU overhead issues (which where talked about for years).

From what I understand people avoid ogl due to lack of support. Not sure how true that is. The person I heard it from has been out of the programming side of things for 5 years.

I think part of the problem is that the general mass of gamers have only just now learned about CPU/OS/driver over head issues. mantle was the first api (in recent history)to address this on the public stage so now they default to mantle being the "legit" API and everything else is a mantle clone.

Hmm, so where are the list of triple A title games supporting DX12? I've heard of game(s) on console not announced for a pc release. But what about PC gamers? That should be the question we should be asking after 2 weeks of this announcement.
If I recall Mantle did announce some sort of PC game support as well as indicated support in future engines when after it's announcement. We knew we were getting some sort of PC gaming support, although it may have been vague at the time.
