The SLI line is just tighter than the CFX line. Pretty hard to argue with this...

Didn't know we were talking about just r9 290 and when they were just released.

You are right though.

As he said in his post, Mantle is about removing CPU bottlenecks. You are not going to have a CPU bottleneck at 1600p Ultra with a single GPU.

You want to know what WILL cause a CPU bottleneck? 7990/7970 Trifire on a 8320 at 1080p.

The article is simply showing that even when an oc'd cpu is used to eliminate bottlenecks, Mantle can still bring extra fps to the table.

cpu bottleneck is a pretty broad term, to most people that means they're cpu is not at 100% most of the time. to me personally, i want my minimum frames to be at their highest possible value at all times, the cpu will hit 100% here and there in certain games, therefore i want the best cpu at the best possible clocks to make sure those frames are at their highest possible fps values. therefore, i will be buying the 5960x biggrin.gif

almost every game at one scene or another. think about it, theres a reason benchmarks with a 4960x even with 1 gpu have better avg framerates then that same 1 gpu with say a 3770k. although its not a dramatic increase its definitely an increase. it happens because on the certain scenes/frames where the 4960x and the 3770k are at 100%, the 4960x is more powerful and therefore on those minimum fps scenes, the 4960x provides a higher minimum so to speak.

Regardless, reducing CPU / driver overhead is something that needs to happen. So it is good that AMD took this step - even though the performance for high end doesn't seem to be outrageous in terms of gains, I do like what Mantle is attempting in principle. Hopefully DX12 will do the same as is widely reported.

High end is a relative term. I do not consider single card high-end. Multi-card performance gains are huge in most cases, like steroids to body building.

Also be suspicious of any of these benchmarks that only go to the 20-30k frames. It seems mantle starts hitching (at least in my case right about the 40k frame time. Than gets more frequent from there on out.)

here are two runs on 64 man siege of shanghai (one at 1080p one at 1440p ultra settings) notice the hitching starts right around 40k frames for both.

6zuf.jpg

to be fair though it is only really noticeable about every 5 to 10 minutes or so, when it really tanks for a split second

for comparison sake here is DX11 1440p ultra

lo4l.jpg

I'd say 99% of the time mantle feels a heck of alot smoother, except when you get that one hitch every 5 to 10 minutes.
