[Build Log - Beginner] BloodWater-2 Project Log - 900D, SR-2, And a Whole Lot of Water!

Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening everybody, and welcome to my first official build log! Over the years I've looked at doing a build log but I never really felt like what I could offer would be worth doing a log for. Mind you, I am still quite self-critical of the idea I have here, but seeing as this build is something special to me, I figured I would share smile.gif

Before we get going with the log I would like to take a moment to say thank you to an amazing individual and unofficial mentor - Syrillian. You were one of the most talented modders I've ever had the pleasure of meeting buddy. I hope you're keeping heaven well modded wink.gif

As I mentioned above, this build is something quite special to me because this is the realization of a dream I've had since one of the components was released in 2009. This was my dream machine (plus or minus some modern components!) as an up and coming builder. I am, of course, referring to a build revolving around the EVGA Classified SR-2 motherboard.

Now I know there have been a few truly stunning SR-2 builds already. Youtuber maxishine comes to mind smile.gif I am quite late to the SR-2 build party, but hey, I've finally made it here! Hence why it's so special to me smile.gif

OK, enough sappy dialogue. On with the build!

The build title BloodWater-2 hopefully eludes to what I plan to do. A black/red color scheme will be used to compliment the SR-2 and the components will be submerged in liquid cooling loops. I want to use hard acrylic tubing here since you can do so much more with the stuff but it will definitely be a learning curve!

Edit:
Here's the current hardware:

CPU: 2x Intel Xeon x5650 LGA1366 6 cores 12 threads
Motherboard: EVGA Classified SR-2 LGA1366 motherboard

Sleeving: Black 550 Paracord
Heatshrink: McMasterCarr Black 2:1 Heatshrink
Fan Power: 2x ModMyToys 4-Pin PWM Power Distribution PCB - 8-Way Block

For anyone who is curious: I typically build workstations around parallel programming, folding, and gaming. I am curious to see how much performance this will have over my current workstation. I expect good things smile.gif

I am no stranger to custom water cooling loops but it has been a while (circa 2011) so I'll definitely need to update myself on the current trends!

I look forward to this build! Please let me know if you have any suggestions/comments smile.gif

See you all soon!

WARNING! Terrible smartphone pictures ahead! Because I don't own a decent camera xD

First wave of hardware finally came in! I didn't order everything from one dealer because I'm too much of a bargain hunter...

Scored an absolutely amazing deal on the SR-2 from an Amazon seller. Hard to believe...I actually went to university with him! Small world O.O

Massive, massive thing!

To give the massiveness of this motherboard context, this is a Corsair 350D. It almost engulfs the thing! HPTX form factor ladies and gentlemen. The red box roughly shows the motherboards edges

One of the two Corsair 860s!

840 EVO! Currently have one of these in my existing workstation. It's blazing fast o.o

One of the two Dominator GT Kits. Did not know this was coming with the airflow fans! Bonus!

Until I accumulate the water cooling stuff, these will keep the Xeons "cool". Conveniently had them from previous builds. Can you guess which one is newer?

I'd love to get some feedback from you all with suggestions on WC parts. The last custom loop I did involved one of the first swiftech apogees...if that says anything. I've been keeping myself familiar with some pieces of the WC industry but I could use the audience's expertise tongue.gif

More to come later today as the next shipment arrives!

Second shipment came in way earlier than expected! eBay listed UPS as the delivery medium, but FedEx arrived with these items....eBay trickery!

The first set of pics were taken with my old droid bionic, but these were taken with my new Droid Maxx. Better?

First up, the Xeon chips installed! Up to this point I've actually never owned Xeon chips, so I'm excited to see how these chips perform.

Chips + RAM = an overly excited owner tongue.gif

And of course, the gratuitous cleaning/thermal paste. Does anyone still use PK-1?

As I mentioned, in the interim between ordering the WC parts the Xeon chips will be cooled by these things. Feels like blasphemy to put these coolers on this hardware...

*shudder*

Plus it means ugly fan wires.... you'd better believe sleeving is being ordered!

You..... (meant to show clearance between VRM heatsink and cpu cooler...but that fan connector got in the way!)

Such a tight fit

Going to test the RAM real quick with Memtest86+ and then errands.. I'll get some pics of the ghetto-test bench shortly!

Almost forgot about the sound card! I will get some pictures of the actual card if needed. Threw it into my current workstation a little quick tongue.gif

And to think, after building custom machines for myself for a little over 10 years now I have NEVER used a sound card...man I've been missing out!

Did some testing earlier to ensure all the components were working properly. Currently in anticipation for the Titan arriving tomorrow!

Not the best way to start....

I didn't even notice the DIMM settings until I took that picture... CAS 7, DDR-1066, 1.5v settings for the DIMMs? O.o
Into the BIOS! Looks like the previous owner had a weird underclock profile set up for the BIOS2 switch...so, cranked up the DIMMs to DDR3-1333, CAS 9, 1.60v

Much better! I let it run all 10 tests. Performed just fine. I'll be looking at getting them clocked up to the DDR3-2000 setting later on.

A quick shot of the SSD & HDD:

The SSD is currently in my existing workstation. It will be ported over to this build when I get most of the parts ordered.

As a side note, am I the only one that finds this port being on the SR-2 a bit....blasphemous?

Current "test bench"...that cardboard box!

After finishing with Memtest86+ I decided to grab an old 160GB HDD I had lying around, installed Ubuntu 12.04 x64, and loaded it up with benchmarks and stress testing software galore! I forgot to take pictures for most of the stuff T_T

I threw in my GTX 780 in place of the Titan (which should be delivered tomorrow) to introduce pseudo-Titan power draw. I'll re-run the tests when the Titan comes in.

Unigen Heaven run on max settings:

Unigen Valley, also max settings:

I mainly ran the two Unigen benchmarks to try and get a sense for what power draw would be like. I was also running Stress in the background with these settings:

And strangely enough, the watt meter never ticked above 380w

Maybe that second Corsair 860 won't be needed yet...at least until I get my hands on more Titan cards ;D

The next things I'm looking to purchase are the case and get started on the cooling equipment. I'm almost set on buying the CaseLabs MH10 but I'll need to wait for another paycheck to come in tongue.gif The components I have now cleared me out of extra spending money!

I'm also pondering the acrylic tubing. I've never used the stuff so I'm not sure what all to look out for. I've seen a couple pipe bending tutorials but I've found that I don't always have the best of luck when it comes to such activities...

By the way, is MDPC still kings of the sleeve? I used to buy sleeving from an Overclock.net member but it's been a LONG time. Cant stand staring at these bare, unsleeved wires frown.gif

Cheers!
