3770k 4.2ghz freeze - Page 2

Him, usually CPU will give you a bsod. When you overclocked did you use the bus oc? That could have corrupt your hard drive. With a k processor the multiplier is the safest way to oc. Not sure with haswell since I haven't owned one yet but your on ivy anyways.

Regardless of how you overclocked seems like no bsod maybe the GPU or hard drive. Please list every component and setup your rig with rigbuilder so its easier for others to help.

Usually the CPU will cause a bsod. I'm wondering if your getting hard drive or GPU crash? Troubleshooting wise, make sure the memory is set correctly in the bios and go over the other settings too. There is usually an optimized settings button and just reset everything. Run it stock again and see if it crashes.

Try to find a pattern on duplicating the freeze. Such as only when gaming, or downloading a large file, etc.

Just a quick order of testing would be something like this.

1. Remove all video cards and see if it freezes off of the igpu. If it for sure is OK add one card at a time until you get the crash again.
2. If it still crashed with no GPUs in leave them out and test one memory stick at a time to eliminate memory.
3. If it still crashes I would at this point test the psu. I have a psu voltage tester I use but sure there is a guide on testing with a voltage meter manually.
4. If it still crashes I would see if you have a spare hard drive to install Windows on to see if its the drive causing the freeze/crash
5: at this point probably the motherboard if everything else passed.

Good luck.

--- hey bro, thanks for showing all these steps for me. The first freeze happened when I was trying to open cpu-z,(was overclocking to 4.2ghz 1.2v), then couple freeze happened when I was testing out different voltage, after i entered my password for windows 8, the froze occurred, sometimes I couldn't even have a chance to enter my password.
--- I managed to get some stable settings like 4.2ghz 1.3v , nothing happened running prime95 so I played some metro2033 and bf3, froze happened within less than 5 minutes of game-play. I thought my cooling was bad but it was only 50c when I was playing.
---- Now i m going to try your solutions out. thumb.gif

I managed to get in with 1 graphic card @ both 4.2 1.2 and 4.5 1.25 setting. so now i m assuming its either power supply or the gpu ?

Interesting. I would swap GPUs and make sure its not that one of them is defective for some reason. Seems like a PSU issue could be the case at this point.

You have more than enough watts so its likely just defective if its the psu.

Just got back from work. I oced with 2 of my 4gb rams at 4.5ghz 1.25v , then the computer froze at the windows welcome screen. Could be the PSU very sure. Anyway,I just ordered a corsair RM 1000 so i guess i will be fine.
