I would argue that they are more relevant now than ever. With the homogenization of video games we are seeing today, where everything is just iterative, we need ground breaking games. We need to get back to the sense of adventure, where developers weren't afraid to take risks and shift the paradigm.

I think it is insulting that these developers feel it is OK to release annual iterations of the same thing, over and over, and really feel like it is OK to charge anything, let alone full retail. More insulting are the throngs of idiots willing to line up for days on end to buy their iterative shovelware, like pigs to slop.

As I said, I used to be the same exact way. I still am to an extent. If a game has a lot of DLC or a season pass, it will heavily effect my decision to make the purchase. I'll be leaning a lot more towards forgetting it and saving my money. However, I personally believe that Titanfall is really awesome, and I'm willing to look the other way for this one. I've been ignoring every Call of Duty and Battlefield game for years, and missing out on gaming with certain friends because of it. I'm just going to suck it up and look the other way for Titanfall, because honestly a few people deciding not to purchase AAA games because of the DLC and season passes doesn't hurt them at all, and if they're games you wanted to play otherwise, you're just hurting yourself by missing out on them.

If it's a game you want, buy it. If you don't want it or don't think the game is worth it, don't. That's how I'm going to be with DLC and Season Passes in the future.

Especially the indy scene is very healthy and there is some quality stuff in there if you look around for a bit. At the end of the day Titanfall is not the only shooter out there which offers one good amount of fun. For example, Tribes:Acend offers similar fast paced action with plenty of fun to be had and it is not the only game by any measure offering that. There might not be titans in the game specifically but I do not think there is many people out there buying the game just because of "omg titans" - most people are probably just after a good fps match to entertain themselves. Granted if one is on console then there is not that much content ofc but well .. that's one of the compromises one does when playing on a console.
Tribes Ascend was pretty awesome....until HiRez completely stopped development of it to focus 100% on SMITE. I was heavily involved in the T:A community, and after HiRez pulled support, the community slowly started to die. So, that's a pretty bad example to use. We can play a dead free-to-play FPS that a developer abandoned in favor of a MOBA, or pay full price for a new FPS that will continue to be updated with both free and paid content for at least the next year. Even as a long time fan of the Tribes series, I'll take Titanfall in this situation.

Most Tribes fans have gone back to Tribes Next (Tribes 2), so check that out if you want a great FPS to play for free. thumb.gif

Edit: and another reason this is a bad example is because any T:A player would really enjoy Titanfall. I've been playing Capture the Flag a lot in Titanfall, and I haven't had this much fun since Tribes: Ascend CTF matches. They're both amazing games!

EDIT:

I guess I feel bad for people that weren't around to experience Catacombs 3-D, Wolfenstein, or the first Doom. The first time the game loaded, and you were in a first person 3-D environment, I mean, holy cow. Up to that point it wasn't really done, games were 2D or text based....

I probably spent the first 10 minutes in the first room just looking at walls, and around it, completely blown away that you could do that on a PC. Screw Mario and his 2-D 8-bit world, I am going to go plow some monsters with a gun, in 3D no less!

You're missing the fact that COD was brought up because the child on the previous page said it's nothing but COD with AI enemies. Nobody is saying COD is the first ever FPS, but it was brought up in comparison to this game, which is why Raven Dizzle was talking about it. It helps to read previous posts in the thread to gain context rather than jumping down someones throat because you're misunderstanding what they're saying.

Season passes and DLC is all fine n' dandy with me....people just need to make sure they don't pre-order the game. Respawn Entertainment themselves have advised consumers to make an informed decision. A beta does NOT inform you about the released state, not completely.

Pre-ordering is what has encouraged EA to push out unfinished/incomplete games.

Doesn't matter if you're a massive Titanfall fangirl, just don't pre-order it. Wait for the released product and wait for player feedback about the state of the game, THEN feel free to go nuts.
As consumers we need to send a simple message to EA: games must be released in a functional + finished state before we buy them.

I know Titanfall is going to release in a fairly polished state, but the point here is to send a message to EA.

Hi-Rez specifically said that they had nothing more to add to Tribes:Ascend, that it was a completely finished product with tons of enjoyable content & gameplay value.

I cannot fathom why you would expect Hi-Rez to force themselves to keep "updating" Tribes:Ascend when they have finished development and want to move on. That's like expecting DICE to keep releasing more Battlefield 2 maps.

What kind of logic is this?

If it was ME3, which built a game with a plot-centric character, then shipped with the character on the disk but locked out by DLC, then you'd have ample cause for complaint. As it is, you're being a petulant, narrow-minded child ignorant of business processes and the real world. I strongly recommend you reconsider your world view.

Problem is I already know they have DLC planned before release the issue is I feel the game is released incomplete. DLC's for minor stuff like skins, weapon color changes, confetti when you die stuff could of easily been added. DLC's like skyrim I would gladly buy because it offers a lot of content for my money spent. This era of DLC's isn't welcomed by me but I also do understand Devs need jobs and food on their tables I just don;t buy games at full price anymore.

Edit - Some of the best games I ever played didn't have any DLC's at all they were good quality games. I feel some games just doesn't try to be everything that it can be on day 1 because they have DLC's they can release.

They only called it "finished" because it wasn't as profitable for them as SMITE was and they wanted to focus all of their effort on one cash cow. There were numerous features the community wanted implemented that HiRez never got around to implementing. Updates don't necessarily mean new content. Titanfall will have free updates that provide more functionality in addition to the new content that we will get from the season pass. Tribes Ascend isn't even getting basic functionality updates anymore.

As in enough to push the game towards the next yearly rehash only for it to be done over again? Lol....

If you want longevity for a game that's what mods are for. To this day even 15 years later people still make/improve mods for Freespace 2. Do you think respawn will be making DLC for Titanfall 15 years later after it releases? DLC done right is what Beth did with Skyrim. I mean hell people are still modding Doom for crying out loud.
