[USA Today] Staples closing 225 stores amid online focus - Page 4

I don't shop at staples anymore. But the thing is, staples, best buy, radio shack, there are a whole slew of these retail stores that seem to be completely aware of this newfangled thing called the internet and somehow manage to screw it up completely. Here's the thing. When I shop at one of these stores, I'm not strictly looking for the absolute best price. I know if I search the internet hard enough I can find it cheaper. What I do want, is to be able to see the product before buying it. I want to be able to get it right now. And I want help if it doesn't work when I get home, able to return it, etc.
My last experience at a best buy, I walk in to get a monitor. I wasn't sure which one I wanted and wanted to see it first. They had exactly 0 on display. The sales person handed me a piece of paper with specs on it. If I wanted that I would shop online! My last experience at a staples, I needed a phone. 5 different phones we went through, they were all online orderable only. Then why am I here in your store?

There are specific advantages to shopping at a retail store as opposed to online. Successful retail stores will be the ones that play up those advantages. The unsuccessful ones will be the ones that continue to do things the way they always did; completely ignore the customer and compete solely on price, which is something they will never win at.

Maybe, but considering I've had similar experiences in three states in completely different parts of the country, eventually it becomes a pattern.

The only time I got to Staples is when I have built up some empty printer cartridges and then I spend that store credit on office supplies. I'd never even consider buying a printer or hard drive there...I will walk by them and scoff at the prices though.

Everything there is so overpriced, it's ridiculous.

Go there at least 4-8 times a year when they have sale or specific items, and they are great for back to school supplies. Got both of my computer chairs there (on sale), I recycle all my printer cartridges as well. They are good for a smart shopper, but like anywhere any more they are too pricey for normal stuff

Honestly, most everything is cheaper online. Even when stores price match, the problem comes, when they never have what I need in store.

Oh and let's not mention the horrible customer service that happens at a lot of stores. Specifically BestBuy........worst ever.

MicroCenter on the other hand has cheaper prices than online (but tax, so it's equal). And they also have amazing customer service (from my experience and buddies too). The only problem with MicroCenter, is that they're too darn far away to get just one thing at at time.

The trick to shopping at staples for electronics is never buy anything at regular price, it will go on sale at some point, wait for it to do so.

Staples regularly price matches microcenter and you can stack staples coupons on top of that, however most of staples coupons are geared to in-store only.
