[OC] Q9650 + ASUS P5Q Deluxe

Thread Starter
Hi all!

It looks like my current rig got expended to the maximum (almost, excluding QX proc) and before jumping to something newest I have decided to overclock what I have (it is one of the reason to do not go for QX). Back to business.

My rig contains:
- Q9650 Rev E0 CPUID 1067A
- ASUS P5Q Deluxe mobo
- 4x 2GB G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK (http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f2-8500cl5d-2gbpk)
- ASUS V-60 CPU Cooler (http://www.asus.com/Thermal_Solution/V60/)

At current stage I have CPU running at 3.1GHz with settings:

CPU Ratio: 9.0
FSB Freq: 345
PCIE Freq: 100
FSB Strap: Auto
DRAM Freq: Auto
VID: 1.1875V
MEM: 1.8V

Max temp so far for Prime95 run was 60C

I have browsed OC.net for Q9650 OC and found some interesting info, like "bad" chip can be OC to about 3.5-3.7GHz when "good" one can go over 4GHz., Q9650 Club, etc

At that stage I have few questions:
- how far I can push with OC and my cooler?
- should I switch FSB Strap from Auto to 333 to avoid North Bridge from frying?
- what do to with mem setting - keep them as auto or switch to 2.0V and put close to 1066 (some solutions are here http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=294462)
- any other suggestions?

Thanks thumb.gif

I dont think you should have a problem hitting 4GHz.

You will need 1.28-1.35v for that. I needed 1.31v for my Q9550.

You probably need better cooler though.

You can leave FSB strap on AUTO.

It's easier to leave memory at a slower speed when overclocking, until you know what your doing at least. Set it to 1:1 with stock voltage/timings. After you find a stable overclock, try raising the DRAM voltage/frequency and lowering timings, but then test for stability again.

Get a new cooler if you do overclock much higher.

- What CPU cooler is good to get?
- What app to use for CPU temp (currently I have Core Temp)?
Like SyveRson said, you'll be fine leaving the FSB strap on AUTO. Your board should be able to do 450+ MHz on the FSB rather easily, as long as your RAM can keep up.

You can go up to 1.4V on the FSB/NB if you need it, but I wouldn't go any higher, and personally try to keep that down around 1.2V. I've got 450MHz at 1.2V on the NB without any issues at the moment.

I can't recommend a good air cooler, because I went from the stock fan to a Corsair H50, and then to a full watercooled loop. But I like CoreTemp for watching the temp on CPU cores, and HWMonitor for temperature readings on the motherboard. You'll want to keep an eye on those as you start pumping the NB with higher frequencies/volts.

Also, since you have a Deluxe board, you should have some GTL ref settings to play around with, which can help with stability above 4GHz with these quads.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I have also a ASUS P5Q Deluxe.
But I run a Xeon E5450 SLBBM

It went 4Ghz @1.176V effortless.
The same cpu went also 4Ghz 1.176V in a ASUS P5Q Premium.
The Q9650 is not as good as a E5450 E0 but should OC enough.

Load setup defaults, set AI ovewrclock tuner to manual, Set FSB to 400, memory at 1066 @2.12V, mem timings 5-5-5-15, CPU Voltage 1.275V (it will be less), set loadline calibration to Enabled, set ACPI 2.0 to Enabled.
Optionally you can set any other setting you like except of cpu/chipset/memory related. Like changing Storage Configuration (if windows was installed in IDE mode and you switch to AHCI/RAID mode then windows will no boot), changing first booting device, etc.

Your heatsink should be good for 1.250V Vcore (after Vdrop). Try the above settings.

OK, I have put CPU on 3.2GHz with those settings:

CPU Ratio: 9.0
FSB Freq: 355
PCIE Freq: 100
FSB Strap: Auto
DRAM Freq: Auto
VID: 1.1875V
MEM Volt: AUTO

But I have no clue where to set up memory to 1:1. Currently it shows as 5:6

Also running Prime95 on those settings I have hit 73C max on Core #0 (rest has 66-69C) and sys temp. max 43C

The original H50 did, as it came with a 775 mounting bracket. I'm not sure that any of the new/current H-series coolers have the right bracket, but you can check. If it doesn't say its compatible with 775, it won't work, as all the other sockets have different spacings between the mounting screws. redface.gif

Based on NewEgg specs is not compatible with 775 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010) but Corsair is saying that it is (http://www.corsair.com/en/hydro-series-h50-cpu-cooler) I'm confused at that point. Does NewEgg selling kind of "scrapped" edition?
