[OC] Q9650 + ASUS P5Q Deluxe - Page 3

You don`t have to run Prime or other pointless test.
Just run memtest86+ for 10 cycles so to know if your ram is stable and cpu overclock is an easy thing.
Your heatsink is more than enough.
Next step is to try 420FSB with 1.265V bios setting (about a little less than 1.250V cpu-z reading)
If you ram is capable then it should be doable.

I was mainly thinking about how the value of socket 775 parts have stayed relatively high for so long. If you need a 775 specific part it'll usually end up costing more than its worth, imho. But you're right about those coolers, you can keep re-using 'em. I just wouldn't pay a whole lot extra just to get something to work on 775 these days. smile.gif

Personally, I was really looking forward to upgrading to Haswell when it came out last summer, but some personal stuff happened and I decided to go back to school, so money's a little tight atm. wink.gif

Back to topic.

I have switched put FSB to 400, per Patentman suggestion, and lowered Vcore from 1.27V to 1.216V, per Jetpak suggestion. I have tested with Prime95 for two hours and got max 78C on Core#0 (whole CPU 71C) and system temp went to 46C. I think I will switch system fans from MID to HI (I have Corsair 650D with manual switches for system fans) to get more air flow through the case.

It can be tricky to lower voltages while increasing clocks at the same time, so I'm glad to hear that its stable for you so far. I personally like to use Intel Burn Test to test my overclocks. Running Prime95 can take hours to detect an error while IBT only takes about 5-10 minutes to give you a BSOD. tongue.gif It'll also heat your chip up really fast to give a good indication of load temps.

Like patentman said, just keep trying to inch up on your FSB and keep an eye on temps.

I said spending $90 or more on a heatsink for a 775 system so to get some Mhz more is not worth it.
You can sell the 775 system, add those $90 and a few more and buy a new system.
What did you misunderstood exactly ?

Of course I will not upgrade them. All of my systems do their job done better than they should.
But I have not spend money on silly things.
You may have said too much about how easily you spend money and that you`re a hard working man and deserve a $90 heatsink, but that`s only talking big. On the other hand you just upgraded from a 5yo system, you keep running an ancient P4 and this points out ... well make the conclusion of yourself.
Do me a favour, next time try harder to make fun of me.

Well, easy to tell - hard to do. As I mentioned previously current prices for some parts got doubled compare to beginning of 2013, so in that stage it is not worth to upgrade anything. Also still considering purchase of a new cooling for 775 which I can use later with new rig. This is my point of view in that case. Back to topic.

Currently I have running at 3.7GHz:
- FSB: 411
- Vcore: 1.216V

IBT running for 15 cycles:
Core#0 76C
CPU 70C
System 39C

Prime95 running for 1 hr:
Core#0 75C
CPU 68C
System 41C

It looks like I have stable 75-76C with current air cooler and if I can hit 4GHz with same stable temp I will leave it as is.
Your cooler must be adequate. I had told you this before. So just try it out.

Now if you do not decide to upgrade to a new system with the money of the (expensive) cooler + selling the 775 system then I do have another suggestion.

Sell the Q9650 that is expensive and with those money grab a Xeon E5450 (for effortless 4Ghz).
I do have some E5450 on my systems so I can know at first hand and I do have tested them on some really good price heatsinks. Among them Zalman CNPS-7000Al-Cu, Zalman CNPS-7500Al-Cu LED, Zalman CNPS-10X Optima.
I would never give so much for just a bunch of aluminum...

So, you won`t spend any money but rather gain some.
And you`ll have a 4Ghz, low heat dissipation, low consumption, low noise.

My E5450 on the P5Q Deluxe does 4ghz @1.176V with a Zalman CNPS-10X Optima at lowest fan speed (I have a zalman fanmate-2 fan speed controller that it does not come with the heatsink but I could use a resistor or the bios fan speed adjustment)

Look at my P5Q Premium + E5440 + Zalman CNPS-7000Al-Cu
*the Premium is a spare mobo for my Deluxe system. In case something fails, if ever, it will replace it. wink.gif
It did 444FSB at such a low Vcore. A lot less than your Q9650 at same speed.

It is a pitty you have such a good mobo, a good heatsink and can`t run effortless 4Ghz.

@JackTheKnife
Your CPU isn't doing too bad, but as patentman said your cooler is holding you back.
Your current temperatures under prime and IBT are high, but still okay.

You could be happy with that and keep in mind that prime and IBT are extreme situations that you only sometimes get under every day usage, and usually not for a long time. If you want to go higher you would need a better cpu cooler. My suggestion is the Thermalright HR-02 Macho, it's about 38-40 EUR where I live and it is pretty powerful, very close to the top edge air coolers like the Noctua NH-D14 and others that almost cost twice as much.
And as some mentioned here, you could reuse that cooler if you upgrade to a socket 1150 or 2011 system in the future.

By getting a new CPU like the Xeon E5450 it's like playing in a lottery but with much higher chances that you "win". If you are unlucky the new CPU will overclock about the same or even a little worse, but these E5450 are known to be good overclockers at still rather low voltages. If you get one really cheap you may want to try that and sell your Q9650 which will still bring you some money since a lot are looking for that final upgrade for their old dual core systems.

Somehow I have got stuck on 3.9GHz

- FSB: 433
- Vcore: 1.216V

IBT is failing after 2-3 cycles and Prime95 returns an error on Core#4 after 20 minutes

CPU reached 80C on Core#0, 74C on #1, 76C on #2 and 75C on #3. No clue why cores have that huge difference between.

System temp is stable 43C

Should I increase Vcore to get 4GHz?

Get this heatsink and some ceramique2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835226051
also..find a fan to put directly onto your NB
Feel your NB,I bet it's getting hot.
Hey! Did I mention that cooler is as good as about any air cooler? It is..

Don't worry about the cores all being different temperatures, that's pretty common. However, I wouldn't want to go any higher on temps.

Did you ever increase NB/SB voltage? If you're only failing tests and dropping cores out of Prime95 without getting any BSODs then you should be pretty close.
Thread Starter
No, I didn't increased voltage on NB/SB. As far I'm getting only failures on IBT or Prime95 no BSODs. Recently I just have increased Vcore to 1.21875V
