I got a PS3 about a month ago, though. Really cheap, so I'm good.

same here but, it isn't working out so well. it cost way more if you wanna play on keyboard and mouse AND on a KVM switch. also mine is BC and apparently the KB and mouse adapter don't work on PS2 titles. at least i bought PS2 titles that emulate properly. rolleyes.gif

If you backup your own PS3 firmware it is perfectly legal also all games have to be ripped for it to be legal.
At least that is how it is in the NL you can make backups of any owned software for personal use.

The PS4 is using jaguar... It's at best about as fast K8. Even in an 8 core configuration it will only be as fast as a Sandy quad core at the same frequency, like 1.5Ghz.

I do support Sony including backwards compatibility/emulation on all their system though and call BS on them claiming it can't be done. More like won't. They could even offer it as a 'premium bios unlock feature' or whatever branding they'd like. It would get me to buy a console again knowing i could play my classics. Heck, Nintendo got it right with the Wii as I can play lots of classic for cheap. Not sure about other consoles, since i don't own them, but it seems like an obvious choice to me.

seems like a stretch of an argument

how many PS1 discs are dead because of age? How many NES catridges are unreadable because of age?
I could be wrong but it cant compare the shelf life of something you burned yourself vs blu-ray disc from factory

Sony working on BC is wasted efforts to me in my opinion, they should focus on running games flawlessly at 1080p/60fps before even considering BC. Why bother with legacy systems if you cant even get your main objective down?

probably 95% of emulator users are because they dont wanna bother buying used dated consoles...otherwise by the time they can get this working half decently a PS3 will cost $20-30

My mind will be blow if they can actually do it. The architecture is radically different from x86. Even if they get it to work, i wonder what the frame-rate and efficiency will be.

I personally don't care for emulators past Super Nintendo, but this is a HUGE technical technical accomplishment if they can pull it off.

Sony working on BC is wasted efforts to me in my opinion, they should focus on running games flawlessly at 1080p/60fps before even considering BC. Why bother with legacy systems if you cant even get your main objective down?

The discs/cartridges may still be functional, but finding a functional system to play them in is getting increasingly more difficult. i have 2 PS1 systems, both barely functional, one only if I turn it upside down... finding old games is also difficult. Finding ANY of that at a reasonable price is often just a joke, especially in my area. Collectors hoard the stuff then resell at a major premium because it's now 'vintage' or 'rare'.

As for BC, they have it easy compared to those in the free market doing it themselves. Sony holds all the cards, knowledge, experience, etc... BC for a new system to run legacy isn't a challenge for them and they have nothing to figure out. It's a choice for them. A choice that puts profits above consumers... when in the long haul happy consumers will drive volume for those higher and more sustainable profits.

For a specific example, several of my older cartridges are now unusable due to age. Primarily oxidation. Sure i could have stored them in an airtight, climate controlled environment... but not many kids/teens think of that. I know when I was packing up my old systems as a kid/teen, I just wanted them in one spot and safe... now vacuum sealed to prevent oxidation. Do i know better now, sure, but we can't go back in time and heal the many many situations exactly the same as mine.

Talking about not wanting to mess with 'used dated consoles'... what's the problem? Graphics were terrible (by modern standards) on FFVII and it's still considered one of the best games of all time. Story, mechanics, and many other things come in long before graphics for defining the value of a game. Even in threads on OCN over the ages, people voting their favorite games are frequently classics that are hard to get anymore. I'd wager your 'statistic' on emu users is more 50/50 than 95%...

Again, BC is a choice, not a problem and BS to leave out.

That and to breath new life into them by running them @1080p, 1440p upwards and applying boatloads of AA, My PS2 games are looking great

Can the PS4's CPU drive emulation of the PS3? I wouldn't think so but maybe I'm wrong, PS2 I'd think would be possible and most certainly the PS1, we've been emulating them for basically years now.

Indeed, really hope they get it working because there are some very good exclusive on the PS3. I really wish they would at least make backwards compatibility with newer consoles since it easier to get a new console considering you can play all the the last gen-games while waiting out on the new games for the new console. Kind of the reason I don't mind buying Nintendo consoles or handlhelds, I can still play my DS games on my 3DS, or even play my gamecube games on my Wii.
