Buy 2 x 8gb or 4 x 4gb?

Thread Starter
I have 4 x 4gb sticks of the magical Samsung ram that no one sells anymore.. I had it all in one computer and things were great. Lately I got into crypto currency mining and built a second rig and split the 16gb of ram I had.. 8 and 8..

The type of coin that I am mining is Ram intensive (i guess).. and I am getting low ram errors while I am mining and surfing the net and some times even my browser crashes..

I was thinking I can either buy two more sticks at 8gb a stick or four more sticks at 4gb a stick each.. Price wise I think 2 8gb are cheaper than 4 x 4gb.. then I would simply move all the samsung ram back on one computer.

On top of the recommendation on what I should do.. can someone recommend some ram sticks as its been awhile since I bought ram.. pretty much it should be the same as when I last bought.. but those samsung ram were so amazing and now there all gone..

Yea it is a shame the magical sammies are gone mad.gif

It is kinda a catch 22 for your question. 8gb put more strain on the IMC but have more sticks does as well. AFAIK more sticks put on a greater strain that larger ones. So I would go for the larger ones. Assuming you are not overclocking them like mad you would be able to get more ram that way obviously.

I personally like gskill but really there are all about the same for quality in my experience. These have decent timings at 9. smile.gif

EDIT. Cheaper at amazon. biggrin.gif

If your platform is dual channel, stick with x2, if it is like X79 which is Quad channel, then split in x4.

I have sammy x4 here. tease tease.

Pretty much this. As for recommendations im on mobile so its a bit difficult to be linking stuff. But ive just started using gskill ripjaw x, which is fine. Or you can pay more for corsair dominators. There are a couple other decent brands but those are the ones id primarily use

Haha.. I am sure I could find some if I wanted too.. but honestly its just ram and I dont need to overclock as I only mining..

Got a Asus P67 1150 I believe (2700k) and the dedi miner which is an Amd+3 with an AMD Sempron 145..
I think there all dual channel no?

2 x 8gb G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 @ $137

or

one of the other Gskill sets they average $160 a set of 2 x 8gb

or

4 x 4gb which average $70 - $85 a set of 8gb so.... $140-$170..

Thinking possibly those even though there orange?

Thanks for the advise guys.. did some more digging and looked into actual ram usage.. it was the mining that was saying I was running out of ram even when I wasnt

No need just yet to buy another 16gb.. was only using 2-3gb of the 8.. thumb.gif

+1 for the help

Just a thought... 2x8GB wouldn't run in my expensive motherboard at above 1333MHz when I got them. Still not sure why to this day. Took an even more expensive motherboard, and new generation CPU to get them to run at speed.

For the record, when mining a memory intensive coin, overclocking your RAM may do wonders. wink.gif I was able to net about 12% performance from playing with my timings... I forgot what I was mining though.
Also, the miner needed a small amount of memory at its disposal, but was heavily abusing it.

I'd recommend trying to boot @ 2200MHz. CAS latency of 10 cycles at most. Your sticks should do it with <1.65V. A lot will depend on your IMC too.

Thanks for the heads up.. I'll try 2133 as I know the Samsung ram I have can do that ez.. didn't think to over clock the ram.. Most of my computers are hard to access and I remote into them so I won't fool too much with it incase it crashed them
