Disclaimer: I love Nintendo games. That means I'm a fan of excellent gameplay, as well as graphics that's not necessarily high end but stylistic and complementary to the game. I also adore the ultra realistic, hardware destroying visuals you can only get with the likes of Crysis, TW2, etc.
With that out of the way, I'd like to address some issues a large number of posters seem to be ignoring in this thread.
- Whether the final product looks better than Crysis or worse than Half Life (1), by itself, is entirely irrelevant. What is, is whether it looks like what was advertised or equivalently based on prior - and very, VERY official - promotional material;
- Contrary to very popular belief, the final product for the consoles will have a major influence on the PC version. Look no further than the release of Far Cry 3 as evidence of Ubisoft willingness to compromise in development assets to shorten the perceived gap between different versions of a game.
I personally am looking forward to a new I from the minds that gave us Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed. If it turns out as successful as other risky AAA ventures like Dishonored, then I'll be much more grateful towards the games industry.
But that's not the issue at play in this very worrying complication of Watch Dog's development. The game was advertised to be something different than this current gameplay video suggests, that is a game with much better visuals. If they had run with this level of graphics since last year, it wouldn't be nearly a problem, but they instead misled the public of its quality. That's not ethical, and very likely neither is it legal.
That issue in and of itself should worry every single customer that preordered or is looking to purchase the game, but let's assume Ubisoft gets away with it. If they release a shoddy console game, consider that they have a strong relationship with the console makers, one which they have a strong incentive to maintain on a positive state. Considering their handling of Far Cry 3 and similar games, would you be willing to bet that they would still let the PC version look a great amount better than what's on the consoles?
