Desktop black screen while gaming

Hello OCN!

Firstly, specs:

Windows 8.1 64-bit
MSI Z87-G45 GAMING Motherboard
Intel i7-4770k CPU
16GB DDR3 Kingston RAM
AMD Radeon R9 290 (stock build)
Cooler Master V650S 650W PSU

So I recently had some annoying problems with my desktop, my computer was turning off during gaming and a weird burning rubber smell would arise from the computer, especially from the PSU exhaust fan, so I thought it was the PSU that had gone bad (Old no-name **** PSU to say the least) so I changed it to a Cooler Master V650S 650W PSU, which seemed more than enough to handle my system under load - now with the new PSU installed, the computer ran fine yesterday playing a good bunch of CS:GO matches, some Hearthstone etc.. nothing that puts a major load on the system, but it ran fine so I wasn't worried. Today I played a bunch of Hearthstone and randomly in one of the matches my computers screen goes black, and the "Analog" "Digital" messages pop-up on the blackscreen as if it is searching for a signal while this was going on the computer was still on and running and there was a weird sound glitch going on from the game (I assume) regardless I was forced to hold down the power button until the computer was turned off, I then proceeded to turn it back on and it booted just fine.

After booting it up, I removed one of the cabinets sides to feel the different components, none of them seemed overly hot tbh, some actually seemed very cool, my OpenHardwareMonitor said that the temperatures were all fine when I was just browsing in idle mode, additionally, nothing is overclocked everything is default settings as far as I'm concerned, my cabinet is kind of small, but from my experience the airflow seems just fine.

I've just installed the latest AMD beta driver to see if this helps with the issue at hand, I am going to be monitoring my temperatures while playing from now on to see if I notice anything that is out of the ordinary, I recently dusted my computer a vaccum while installing the new PSU, and I'm more or less sure I plugged everything in correctly. The thing I personally think might be the culprit could either be my GPU (somehow) overheating or ******* up somehow (because of screen going black etc) or it could be that my old PSU has messed up my mobo when it pretty much started burning up and shutting down and starting to fail.

Any help and ideas are much appriciated!

And thanks for reading!

Gosh it sounds like the cheapy PSU burning out may have caused more damage to something else, immediately your GPU or Motherboard. If you have a spare GPU I'd test with that first. If it still goes black, it could mean motherboard damage. If you're under warranty on either, you could be in luck, but it's not looking good right now..

Thank you for the reply, I've been doing some monitoring today after it happened, still hasn't happened yet again, temperatures have been looking fine, been playing some games, going to boot up BF4 later on ultra and see if this changes anything!

That PSU isn't the best to pair with a hungry R9 290 - is that PSU multi or single 12V rail? I've had similar issues when overclocking my old 1090T on an 'insufficient' PSU.

Even a 500W PSU would be enough to run this system that's for sure, the 650W is just to be safe, and i thought why not I just bought it

If anyone think the V650S is a crappy PSU you are wrong its the best PSU in that price range

I'm no PSU expert, but I'm pretty sure that the R9 290 can draw up to 370 Watt at peak spikes, and that's not overclocked.
I do not know what his CPU would be drawing, but is 200 Watt peak for an i7 miles out? I'm just saying that if there is an issue with it, then his PC build could be showing that. Tbh it could be a lot of things, and I didn't full read the OP; I apologise!

Any idea what's up yet?

The system may pull 370W from the wall with the card at load, but that's factoring in PSU efficiency for the testing. I'm not sure how a card can pull 370W when the pins/PCI lane can only give 250W.

Anyway, I'm not that good with boards (or Intel tongue.gif ), but is that board capable for his i7? Do you have a custom fan profile set up for the card?

Lately the computers been running fine, I haven't done any major stress tests, but the GPU seems cool in general, as long as I turn up fanspeed to around 50% during heavy game sessions, other than that, I'm pretty sure the MSI motherboard should be exactly what this i7 needs, since it's one of the newer MSI gaming mobo's

There has been no computer shutdown or anything like that since I made this thread, what I personally think it might be, is my cabinet, my cabinet is kinda small for these components, they need space for good airflow and the way the cabinet is designed when closed, I think it kinda chokes the GPU over time, so for now I have one side of my cabinet off and I keep close eye on the temperatures, I'm getting a tower cabinet or something bigger soon.

Just remember that computers need more intake than exhaust. If using an air cooler for CPU, put the rear fan on exhaust and all others on intake. If using a liquid cooler (like me) put your rear fan on intake as well as all the others. This allows my CPU to have even more fresh (cooler) air to exhaust. And since I have a 240mm exhaust fan, I don't need my rear or exhaust too.
