Anyway, I'm not that good with boards (or Intel tongue.gif ), but is that board capable for his i7? Do you have a custom fan profile set up for the card?

Not flogging a dead horse here, as i'M aware my input isn't relevent to the OP. But for your reference, Tom's did a very detailed run down of the 290 and 290X Here. Worth a read. I believe a 6 and 8 pin PCI-E power connector combo is good for 250 Watt - so add in the PCI slot? No idea how it works tbh. But they got a peak draw of 370 Watts. For the card alone.

8 Pin gives 100W, and a 6 Pin gives 75W. PCI lane gives another 75W. That is why I am saying the 370W cannot be real. Not to mention the cooler wouldn't be able to cool it at all. (Don't say they can't cool it. AMD just chose to leave the fan curve at minimum.)

Edit:

They used an ASUS overclocked 280x with a 8350 overclocked to 4.5GHz. Just as I expected. (They used other cards as well, but the 370W pull you were talking about was overclocked.)

I can assure you that the cards alone can pull up towards 400 Watt peak when heavily overclocked. There are coin miners out there in the masses who'd confirm that!

And it was 290 and 290x testing I linked. The OP has a 290.

Again... after factoring in PSU efficiency and the other components in the system. And no doubt they had the monitor plugged in the same strip they were measuring.

The AMD reference card test was pulling 336W with a 8350 at 4.5GHz. If you think about it, that is actually not that much for an overclocked 8 core and a high end GPU.

Anyway, to stay on topic, I wouldn't doubt that he was having a GPU shut down due to heat. Same thing happened to me when I changed the thermal paste on a GT 430. GPU completely shuts off to prevent any more heat to be generated. A little more detail of what happened. (Click to show)
I had just changed the thermal paste on a GT 430. My first time changing a GPU's paste. I put it back in the system, booted it up and opened HWMonitor. Temperatures were quite high for idle (forget what they were exactly). I went to launch up Minecraft and the screen when black. No idea what happened so I force shut it down and booted it back up. This time when I launched MC, I left it in windowed mode and watched the temps. It hit 104°C, then black screen a second later. I immediately knew it was shutting down from thermals. I checked the card BEFORE shutting the system down, not even the fan was left spinning. The card completely shut itself down.

Hey there - a reminder to everyone to keep AMD graphics-related issues in the AMD/ATI forum where you will get better answers :) I've moved this thread there.

Regards,
