I've read the PS4 already does what DX12 does, but the PS4 uses OpenGL...doing a form of virtual texturing. Not quite the same thing, but it apparently nets the same end result. Textures loaded faster...though instead of specializing in tiles, it specializes in caching more texture data into memory to be reused. In the end it is still smaller bits of texture data getting read from memory or processed at a time.
So I don't know if there are tricks that the PS4 can pull out of its sleeve to get a performance boost besides developers learning how to better utilize it...and that 32MB of eSRAM might be the perfect staging area for tiles to get queued. It could end up being big for the Xbox.
Though that Xbox logo popping up there should mean that most DX11 GPUs should be able to support DX12 unless AMD did something special for them.
Ok I would like to see where this goes. I honestly expect to see something like Mantle on this. If DX 12 allows it to run games better then the PS4 because of fancy technical reasons then it would just be great.
dx and opengl are just software api's that expose features of the hardware. dx12 might not add features (it probably will), but it will definitely try to go what it already does, but faster.
Technically speaking they can emulate the new features of a newer DX version on older hardware. Usually the question becomes "At what performance cost?"
Also, there are very probably some features they can't emulate, but for marketing reasons even supporting one DX12 feature is probably enough to call it DX12 support. Just not full DX12 support.

This is certainly possible too, as these standards have likely been in the works for a while. Though depending on how the "spec" has changed in the last year since the hardware was finalized would influence how much of DX12 the XBOne can support.
ya if xbox one already supports DX 12, i dont think were going to see any major changes. Xbone is not a "gaming" system, its a home entertainment system, and that's straight from the horses mouth.
we need mantle and open GL for any actual innovation in graphics API.

Actually DirectX12 is supposed to bring close to metal programming. If Microsoft really did have AMD reconfigure the GPU to support DX12, you could get a significant performance boost. Until more is released its anyone guess though.
On a side note, MS could release something like an Xbox 4k edition or something with GPU hardware changes.
Let's not forget, the hardware in the X1's SOC is not off the shelf parts, they're custom... and we still don't have full disclosure as to what it entirely is; perhaps this is why. I wouldn't be surprised if part of what they developed into that thing is some kind of hardware support for DX12 features. We'll find out soon I guess.

So, basically this is their way of selling you windows 9 right? You won't be able to play "DX12" console games unless your console detects a win 9 system on your home network, even though consoles don't really use directx at all.
