[Microsoft] Xbox One is getting DirectX 12 - Page 8

If the biggest thing DX12 does is give low level access to GPU resources then maybe it is possible most of our DX11 stuff will be DX12 capable as well?

Either that or the Xbox One's GPU IS DX12 compatable (DX12 has been in the pipes for a while now most likely) and its just "disabled" or running in DX11 mode right now.. or DX12 is largely focused on improved performance and optimization, thus allowing the One to take advantage of it (and possibly bump the graphics up to get closer to the PS4...)

After all AMD announced that their last-gen cards supported Mantle just like the new R7 and R9 series do

It really comes down to what DX12 is. And at the moment, only Microsoft programmers and engineers know what DX12 is. Maybe nVidia and AMD have some limited knowledge, but they're not going to share either.

Mantle was easy. The R9 290x is basically GCN evolved (slightly). It wouldn't be hard to tweak Mantle to run on previous GCN cards, and considering the R9 280x is just a rebranded 7970 with some tweaks...

You will notice that Mantle does NOT support VLIW4 and previous generation cards. That means the low end 76xx and below are not Mantle compatible (not sure what 77xx uses, probably GCN).

Since everybody seems to be talking about it, maybe so.

I think the GPU in a XB1 is a relatively weak DX11, so I wonder how weak a DX12 card it will be relative to the DX12 cards the PC gets. The GPU in the XB1 could be no better than on-board Intel DX12. It could even be worse.

When xb1 gets dx 12
It will push ps4 in the dust
There will be big performence boost

Mark my word
Dx 12 can handle more tessalation and FPS once it's in xb1

No.I dont know why people believe this. Xbox use already a custom version of dx11.1 with extensions for fixed hardware. If xbox gonna support dx12 it will be the new features portion. It will not gonna boost the performance of xbox because they already have 2 APIs one high level and one close to the metal. Then there is always the hardware advantage of ps4

Ha, you're funny.

It's going to have to be some kind of black magic/voodoo to overcome the 50% more shaders, 100% more ROPs and more than double the bandwidth the PS4 has. The Xbox won't recover from such a hardware deficit with software alone.

Its not only that. They have 10% overhead from the double/triple os

Just look the real first next gen game only for ps4:

I'm going to take a punt and guess you're heavily invested in the Xbox camp, and I'm happy for you, I hope you enjoy your system.

Back to your original statement though, you're essentially arguing that a 7790 with 8GB DDR3 (XO) is going to outperform a 7870 with 8GB of GDDR5 (PS4). 99.99% of OCN know that an entry level 7790 with limited bandwidth isn't going to beat a 7870 with ample bandwidth. No amount of overclocking or software magic is going to overcome actually having 50% more hardware and 100% more bandwidth. Also, the assumption could be made that any degree you can overclock the 7790 by, you could also overclock the 7870 by.

I'm not even sure why this would be up for discussion on OCN, the general forum user here is much more knowledgeable regarding hardware specs than your average Joe and can see that, at least on paper, this console generation is an absolute whitewash in favour of the PS4. DX12 isn't going to turn that around, especially as both systems are close to the metal to begin with.

I just hope it supports more system calls like mantle. I know AMD has a lot banking on Mantle, but I think that unless Nvidia supported it in some way, it was kinda dead in the water. We'll see. thumb.gif
