So basically need some opinions, Can get a R9 290X DirectCu2 near msrp and a lightning for $130 more ontop but my thoughts are that is it worth $130 more ontop of a DirectCu2?

The DCUII has a pretty badly optimized cooler for the Hawaii cores, and the Lightning is the overclocker's dream card on AMD's side. So if you are going to be overclocking on water or so, there is no question about it- Lightning is the better card. But it should NOT be $130 more than the DCUII or any other 290x mad.gif

Yeah I know what you mean about the price but that' what the current market is. These won't be put under water, The lightning has a better cooler but it's also 3 slots, It has hynix chips. That's about it I'm not really going to push about the R9 290X core since it seems no matter what you'll be limited to the 1100 range. But It doesn't strike me as $130 more in worth.

The lightning has some Samsung chips in retail availability as well based on what I have read.

Even on air though- I would argue the DCUII is the worst non reference cooler out there. Are these the only 2 options you have?

No there's practically all other options out there. Any thoughts on XFX DD?

Not really, the 290x owners club will be best for that. As far as I know the Sapphire Tri-X and Powercolor PCS are good coolers and I bet the Lightning will be right up there at the top.

IMO the Lightning is worth more than the Asus in looks alone. Still, all of the current AMD hardware prices are bonkers tight now. This is a terrible time to be buying any of their video cards. Better off waiting for some of this hysteria to calm down first...

Haha yeah prices are bonkers I'm using these cards for gaming/mining. I'm wondering if it's worth the premium over the dcu2 of 130. If nvidia cards could mine as well as the amd ones I'd just buy 780 ti,s and be done with it.

The 290 is like $500-600 depending on the brand.
