No, not necessarily. It does come down to skill and luck. Just goes to show that there are average cards and better ones. Luck of the lottery. My first 290x barely did 1200 on water. It was definatley a stinker in my opinion. I'm sure these lightnings will prove to be like most other hardware, you get lucky or need to bin a few to find a good one.

Pretty much that, need luck to get great silicon, & some skill to get the most out of it. The non-reference PCBs have a bit of advantage since you can basically freeze it & cram enough voltage down it's throat to outperform most reference, but it's still mostly luck in finding a great gpu in the first place.

This is disappointing.
What is the point of buying a Lightning if it OCs no more than a reference card...?

I don't know about you guys but 1350/1700 is a damn good OC for the 290x. I can bench MAX 1275/1650 with 200mV but it's not stable for gaming or conducive for long term performance. I dial it down to 1200/1550 for that.

Were you on air Gunslinger? If so imo you have a really good card

He was on ln2, that's why it's disappointing. $750 for a beefed up card that is no better than reference. The only good thing is consistent 1650-1700 memory clocks. Some reference were just terrible, but some are gems. Seems lighting is a constantly average card.

Oh ok I just saw that pic of his LN2 setup at the start of this page redface.gif Then it's not as good I agree. It's a little surprising to me that the lightning has been this hit or miss so far. I'm not familiar with the 780 ti classifieds or kingpins but do they also have a large variance for OC capability a la the lightnings? I really thought the Samsung memory ones could break 1800 with LN2 without breaking a sweat.

Those 1800 memory clocks are for Nvidia cards.
You'll be really lucky if your Hawaii card does 1800 on memory.

I am curious of what ASIC people have got?
I mean it hasn't been proved that higher ASIC means a better OC but when people are struggling so much with OCs on these things.
The more data we have, the better.
