I have one, admittedly stupid, question that I've got to ask you. Would modding the factory backplate like that void the warranty? I mean, void it more than installing a water block does... Would they still RMA a card that is returned to them in stock condition but with the backplate messed with?

If you take a look at the post on page 1, you can't visually tell the difference between stock screw hole and modified one. Stock screws will still retain backplate, if you had to return for rma. The difference in hole size is like .005".

Please try a stock to stock comparison.
Leave the lightning at stock and bring your reference to that speed & then compare.

If the scores aren't close then you can go ahead and RMA your card.
