Last night i got everything working, and since I only have a 60gig ssd that widows is on, last night i installed steam to that ssd.

This morning, i reinstalled steam to my HDD ( for space reasons )

and i'm running into the same issues as before.

EDIT:

Did you install Win8 and then upgrade to 8.1 or clean install 8.1? Windows 8 drivers =/= Win 8.1 drivers. If you did upgrade reinstall ALL of your drivers using the Windows 8.1 drivers if they are available.

Run any and all diagnostics you can, test mem, gpu, cpu, hdd's.

make sure all firmware is up to date.

Did you install Windows in Legacy mode or UEFI mode? Does your motherboard use UEFI or BIOS?

In eventvwr go to Windows Logs and check application and system, report the exact errors (red icons) making sure to include event id, any error codes, and exact description. Error 41 was likely from you manually restarting. The events have time stamps, using those will help you pinpoint what you know happened when and whats going on around it. IE you manually restart at 4pm, error 41 shows at 3:59:30pm and theres some other error at 3:57:00pm then that error is likely the issue.

Are you using the nvidia graphics driver from nvidias site, the graphics from the card manufacturer or from Windows update? regardless try one of the others you havent tried yet.

I don't have a windows 8.1 license, so the only way I could install it was by going windows 8 then the free upgrade to 8.1

MoBo is in UEFI i think ( i run osx on the side so its kinda werid )

After tinkering around, I got CSS to finally work off my hard drive, but still having issues with Civ5, I'll play around some more and see what I can do.

You dont need a license for Win 8.1 to install 8.1. Win 8.1 was a free upgrade. You need a key to install 8.1 and then you can use your 8 key to activate. Microsoft themselves provide the install keys.

This is official and from Microsoft, im not providing anything illegal:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867.aspx

You just need a Windows 8.1 iso which can be gotten from the official Win 8 download utility.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only
Directions:
http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57608376-285/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8.1-iso/

Use the above at your own risk.

Also:

Run any and all diagnostics you can, test mem, gpu, cpu, hdd's.

make sure all firmware is up to date.

Did you install Windows in Legacy mode or UEFI mode? (google this, not the same as your bios being UEFI/LEgacy, tho related)

I tried installing 8.1 directly, and it said my ( legally purchased ) code was not vaild, thats when I went to 8, then to 8.1

all GPU drivers are from nvidia/zotac, so that shouldn't be the issue.
Yes you cant use a 8 key to install 8.1, but you can use the MS provided 8.1 key to install (not activate) and then once you install 8.1 replace the generic key with yours to license it. The problem with 8 -> 8.1 upgrade is that the 8 and 8.1 drivers are not created equal. As an example my ASUS wifi adapter works wonderfully in 8, upgraded to 8.1 and seemed to work fine. Had issues with it when i setup a server and started xfering large files. Found out that the driver was not 8.1 compatible and either had to get another adapter or use my nic (i bought a ethernet cable).

I agree, the display drivers shouldnt be the issue, but then again the issue shouldnt be an issue. If everything did what it should then we wouldnt need to troubleshoot things. Try the MS provided drivers or the drivers direct from Zotac or the ones direct from Nvidia. Worst case you eliminate the gpu driver being the issue.

I doubt very highly this is a Windows specific issue for many reasons. Others dont have the same issues, a clean install hasnt seemed to resolve it, and Windows is still responsive when you get the black screen. This is likely a hardware or driver issue.

You could always try Windows 7 and see if you run into issues with it.

Have you tried running Steam and the game exe in Win 7 compatibility mode? Win 8.x is just not compatible with some games.

yup.

Just bought another game today that I can't play.

its somethign to do with steam and 8.1 and my system.

All other non steam games work, its a sad day when EA games work and steam does not.

I'm just installing a less than legal copy of 7 in the morning and see if it works.
