New Graphics Card or New Build?

Thread Starter
Hi All,

I am trying to decide on buying a new graphics card or just doing a new build. I am currently running 2 AMD HD 6850s, and I realize it is probably time for a change. My thought was to switch camps and buy a NVIDIA GTX 780, but I was also wondering if I should just do a new build all together, since this build was done in 2011. Overall, it is still serving me well, even though I find the MB to be suboptimal, as it locks up from time to time. I am wondering if a new build will just be the better choice, or if the current build with a serious graphics card upgrade will deliver improved gaming performance for the next year or two. I also do a lot video encoding, and I find my current processor to be more than capable in that regard. I am not sure if a new Haswell build will deliver noticeably improved performance relative to the price. Thanks for your thoughts!

Assuming this is your sig rig, you should be able to get a new card without any issues. The 2600K is a good CPU and you don't even have it OCed. It should happily hit 4-4.5 on air and be more than adequate for another year or two. This thread has plenty of info for the Sandy Bridge chips:

As for the rest of your rig:

16Gb of RAM is still overkill at this point. No problems here.
850W PSU is more than enough for your needs unless you decide to get multiple Titans or 290Xs.
SSD and WD Black- good drives.
Cooling and case- nothing wrong.
Motherboard- This one is up to you. If you are afraid of it dying on you go ahead and get a new one. If you think it will survive, there is nothing wrong with it.

A new card is fine. The 2600k can handle any modern game today. And you have Scythe Katana cpu cooler so you can verclock it a little to improve video encoding time.

Thanks all. Well, as it happened, my mobo just died. So, now I have to figure how to do a board swap in the rig, something I haven't done before. I have a few specific questions about that but I'll start a new thread in Mobo section. Thanks for your help.
