Samsung 4K 1ms monitor $754 it has begun - Page 12

People its like this:

IPS: Great colors, but garbage grey to grey, trashy black levels and unevel back light bleeding. IPS are great for web surfing, video & photo applications, but kinda sucks for gaming due to horrid motion blur as a result of the 6ms+GtG.

TN: The U28D590 is a high level TN panel. Its not that cheap garbage you see for $89 at the local office depot. It has an 8-quasi-10 bit panel which makes good colors and an acceptable black level. Gaming is good due to 1ms grey to grey which keeps motion blur as low as it can possibly go on a 60hz panel, web surfing is good, but video & photo applications kinda suck because viewing angles are trash. Fortunately, that's not a problem for me because I watch displays under 40" head on, but for those IPS users who prefer to hang from the ceiling, sit on the floor and watch from the powder room I can see how viewing angles are a problem.

So really there it is. If your a gamer, the U28D590 is gonna serve you better than an IPS panel, but if you prefer to look at pretty pictures and edit video then IPS is the way to go. This attitude that IPS is the end all be all is laughable when its got some pretty hefty drawbacks just like TN. If you ask my FW900 it will tell you that both are crap smile.gif

Have you ever used an Asus VG248QE in strobing lightboost mode? Have you every used a EIZO FG2421 in Turbo mode? When is the last time you tried a CRT for gaming?

If you have tried any of those next to your IPS you would never want to play a fast motion game on a blurry IPS ever again.

And have you ever tried a Samsung S27A750D / S27A950D? Those have TN panels that looked waaaay better than my Dell U2410s!

Modern IPS panels have quite respectable pixel response times, but older IPS panels were pretty bad compared to TN. And even the best LCDs can't touch Plasmas/CRTs.

An FG2421 is VA, I don't know how Eizo dealt with that rolleyes.gif

There is no setup that will even handle 4K with 120Hz unless you do some quad-SLI/quad-fire with lowered settings. I would suspect next-gen would be able handle it though.

Whilst I agree with some of your comments (i.e. there are advantages to using TN over IGZO IPS-type screens in this case) there is one crucial thing to understand more broadly. Pixel responsiveness is only one small piece of the responsiveness jigsaw. At 60Hz many IPS panels have reached a stage where pixel responsiveness is simply as good as it needs to be for optimally low motion blur vs. comparable models. It doesn't matter whether a given pixel transition occurs at 2ms or 8ms, the motion blur from your own eye movement completely masks the pixel response and makes everything look the same. Overshoot from overly aggressive pixel overdrive is another matter of course, but not something that is problematic on the models I'm referring to here. IGZO IPS-type panels have many transitions that are much slower than 8ms though, which is problematic even at 60Hz.

You're singing the praises of 'LightBoost' elsewhere so just make sure you understand why that makes a difference and how that is significant when discussing response times. This article is a good start - http://pcmonitors.info/articles/factors-affecting-pc-monitor-responsiveness.

The main advantage of IPS over TN for me is the viewing angles. Not just the number shown, as that is not that different between TN and IPS but what actually happens when you look at your screen at angle. With TN there is this horrific shift in colors while with IPS all that happens is that contrast drops.

This is interesting screen but I would not go for it with that ppi and TN screen. When looking at the photo one can already see the color shift in the corners of the screen even when looking at it straight on.
