New Distro - "Ch..Ch...Ch..Ch...Changes" - Page 3

Indeed. However I don't see what gobo is trying to do as some huge functional or fundamental change; though the physical locations of the files is changed to a more logical organization (honestly, it makes more sense for the programs and their associated files in the same place. However; the way gobo does it they still have the usual folders as well to some extent. That would be the right way to do it. That makes it an easier transition for Windows veterans without affecting the normal workings of the OS. That would be a huge step forward imo. A lot of people get very discouraged just because the file system is foreign to them. Slowly they would learn the benefits of having all of the configuration files stored in one common location.

Bedrock on the other hand is a huge fundamental rebase. Instead of allowing fragmentation to continue as it has and the different minor benefits and pitfalls of each of the different small groups of Linux distributions to segregate the community... they are building a tool set that removes those boundaries.

So what command do I use to tar up all my application config files? Seems like a stupid layout to me.

Why is UNIX directory hierarchy even a problem that needs fixing? Is that the primary goal of this distro? To fix a non issue?

I assume the config files would end up with in right spot with system environment variables...unless I'm missing something..?

Yeah the configuration files will exist in their proper locations as well from what I can see. And yes its fixing something that isn't fundamentally wrong. But it's not fixing the operating system - it's tailoring for a base of varying users. People who come from windows would expect this behavior - and depending on how your brain works it may very well be more logical for files to exist in the manner this distribution presents them. I don't think there is anything wrong with either way of doing things. Just one more thing you could change to fit your tastes more.
